Race called for Marshall, by Decision Desk.. I suspect Mitch McConnell will be breathing a sigh of relief.

In Kanas’ 2nd Congressional District incumbent Republican Steve Watkins, who has been indicted as part of a fraudulent voting investigation has lost his primary to State Treasurer Jake LaTurner; the Democrats have hopes that Topeka Mayor, Michelle De La Isla can make this race competitive.

Was the ambiguity of that statement deliberate?

Was the ambiguity of that statement deliberate? The bit about Watkins was lifted from the New York Times results page, and I was just calling it a night and couldn’t guarantee not falling asleep while I went and looked up the details, which, according to The Hill, are: “The lawmaker was charged in July with interference with law enforcement, providing false information, voting without being qualified, unlawful advance voting and failing to notify the DMV of change of address. The first three charges are felonies, and the fourth is a misdemeanor. Watkins reportedly registered the address of a Topeka UPS store as his home address for the 2019 municipal election and allegedly voted in the wrong city council district.”

Remember New York? Last night the State Board of Elections certified two primaries in safe Democratic Districts without releasing updated vote totals.
Carolyn B Maloney has again seen off a challenge from Suraj Patel in the 12th District, and Richie Torres, who identifies as Afro-Latino and gay, will replace the retiring José E Serrano in the 15th District.

Absolutely, the very worst type of clientist, race baiting, machine African-America politician. Unlike some long term incumbents who had lost he both deep roots in the district and couldn't credibly be accused of having lost touch so his defeat is a very nice surprise.

Ruben Diaz and David Carlucci losing was probably better, but it's certainly the best unseating in a primary.

He's been an elected legislator continuously for 37 years so really an end of an era and an even more crushing defeat in that context.

Clay is an absolutely foul individual and was complicit in a corrupt bargain with the Republican majorities in the state legislature to draw the present (absurd) district boundaries around St Louis because it shored him up. Good riddance.

In Michigan’s 13th District “Squad” member Rashida Tlaib has won her primary rematch against Brenda Jones 66-34.

Is this the first (primary) defeat of a moderate CBC member who wasn’t scandal-ridden or subject to redistricting shenanigans? If that’s true, it is potentially pretty consequential at the national level compared to, say, the primary insurgencies against an ailing NY Democratic machine. I wonder whether it might encourage some earlier retirements or serious challengers. If I’m not mistaken, 2020 has just exceeded the average for congressional primary defeats in an election cycle.

I don’t think Engel was scandal ridden in New York, not in the ethical sense was Dan Lipinski in Illinois, he’d just grown too conservative even for the party establishment in his district. They both seemed to take their primaries more seriously than Clay, who was out fundraised and outspent by Bush. Bush also had basically not stopped campaigning for the last two years, which also applies to Marie Newman, Lipinski’s conqueror. There will be redistricting next time, which usually pushes a few into retirement; the other thing to watch for is the Democratic caucus has a two Congress limit on serving as a Chair, so there may be some, having hit that barrier in 2022, who decide to go out and earn some private sector $ on the back of their Chairmanship. Of course the obvious retirement is Pelosi herself, who pledged this would be her last stint as Speaker; it’ll be interesting to see if she takes Hoyer with her or whether he has one shot at the top job.

Another potential mover may be Adam Schiff, a Senate run if Kamala Harris becomes VP or a gubernatorial challenge to Gavin Newsom.
