We'd only moved into the area the previous autumn, and I hadn't had time to 'network' much with people in Watford CLP, who very sensibly weren't very interested in the enterprise. I knew it was going to be a bad day when the pensioner I took in the car to the polling station had already voted by post.... Funny that Giles-Medhurst had also originated in Harrow - presumably you knew him from then? (was that your wife who stood against him in Headstone South in 1990?) No, Susan Gray who stood in Headstone South in 1990, wasn't married to me. But Ann Swaine, Labour councillor for Wealdstone ward 1990-2000, was! The funny thing about Stephen Giles-Medhurst is that he was a councillor for 20 years in Harrow until the "red tide" of 1998 saw his defeat. At which point he moved to Hertfordshire. And ten years later I move into the same local government ward as him! The even funnier thing is that in the early 1980s we collaborated to a limited degree on the history of Harrow elections. He did have some information and results for the 1934-63 period which he shared with me, and this has led to me giving him a name-check on the Home page of my current web site!

Pretty decisive 4-cornered contest in Ashford 1991:- . I just found this was posted back in Feb but didn't notice it then- have since told the tale in my Ashford history thread, but as I explained there this result is all the more remarkable if you realise Terry Golding the independent here was George Koowaree's predecessor as councillor for Waterside

I was a candidate for the Labour Party in the 2019 North Somerset Local Elections in Weston Hillside. We were the third largest party in the safe Lib Dem ward, but look at the majority:
Mark Canniford (LD) - 1,516 John Crockford-Hawley (LD) - 1,429 Chris Nettleton (Cons) - 334 Hilary Coombes (Lab) - 293 Neil Norton (Lab) - 262 Michael Wedlake (Cons) - 258 Paul Coles (UKIP) - 198
And this is for the town council on the same day:
M Canniford (LD) 1,554 (E) J Crockford-Hawley (LD) 1,504 (E) R Armstrong (LD) 1,356 (E) C Nettleton (C) 351 G Jones (C) 296 H Coombes (Lab) 290 D Ancill (C) 287 W Harper (Lab) 241 N Norton (Lab) 239 J Boxshall (Ind) 151
We weren't paper candidates and did put a couple of leaflets out, even the Conservatives did.

For general elections, the record is East Kerry in 1885: Jeremiah Sheehan (Nat) 3,169 Charles Robertson (Con) 30 Sheehan's nationalist successor, James Roche, slumped from that 99% high to a miserly 75%, most likely due to catholic disapproval of his divorce. Oddly enough, despite his Irish nationalist politics, his great-great-grandsons are Princes William and Harry. Post-war, Northern Ireland, as usual, surely wins these things in Westminster terms. General election high: 1959 in South Antrim: Cunningham (UUP) 52,786 - 95.1% Traynor (SF) 2,745 - 4.1% By-election high: Paisley (DUP) 33,937 - 97.4% Barry (FAIA) 515 - 2.6%

Another great-great-grandson of Roche is the well-known actor Oliver Platt, who is therefore a third cousin to William and Harry.

A local example from the local elections in Birmingham last year for the Alum Rock ward:
Alum Rock 2018 (2) Labour Mohammed Idrees 4,910 Labour Mariam Khan 4,464 Liberal Democrat Thomas Lister 296 Conservative Richard Brookes-Bland 215 Conservative Amil Khan 214 Liberal Democrat Colin Ross 187 Majority 4,168
Surely that got to be between 85-91% of the vote?
Another example from Pill in North Somerset this year:
Independent Donald Davies* 1322 90.36% Conservative Amanda Weeks 133 9.09%

I did say ***post-war.*** My knowledge of elections pre-1945 is sadly deficient.

Well, standing as Fascists in 1940 was a tad provocative.
