Some of the finest - and in more than one sense of the word - constituency profiles ever published in any format anywhere.

Overall turnout expected to be around 55%. Reports of a notable differential in turnout - high in Protestant areas, low in Catholic ones.

SDLP vote seems unlikely high. If that's correct, perhaps moderate unionists have been pushed to the SDLP?

Excellent preview. Well said about the news blackout about this byelection. Shame on the BBC.

90% counted and the SF lead is about 20%. Always assuming those observing the count are getting the numbers right and reporting them accurately to the press. I'd guess the first is likely, god knows about the second.

Thinking back to other Irish elections, the figures from the tallymen and the box tallies tend to be relayed accurately - there doesn't seem to be the element which you get in GB of deliberately downplaying your own party in order to make the result look more impressive when it finally comes.

They are putting the batches in trays with the thousands marked out, so it's quite easy to say which way this one's going.

Apparently the spoilt ballots include written-in votes for John McAllister (the UUP MLA who resigned over the unity candidate), and Hugo Chavez.
