While having no wish to muck up your Yule celebration (I think the solstice is actually the 21st or 22nd so it may be on Yule eve which would make it the longest night) the 6 month rule is from the date of the vacancy not from polling day. So I assume the seat has been vacant for a couple of weeks or more.
