So why does Mr Lamb still need to stand on a Save Our Stretton ticket, or is he claiming the credit for the inspector's decision and hoping to reap the rewards at the ballot box?

How do you manage from where you are to be into the intimate details of a local dispute in darkest East Staffordshire , and undoubtedly you will be equally expert everywhere else? I really find our shrinking world quite disturbing

Just put it down to my age, I suppose I have now also googled Mr Lamb's Facebook stuff - interesting!

I wonder if Green but no LD is a sign of a continuing pact in this area? No idea, but maybe there were negotiations between the two camps and the Greens lost Would be a hard one for either party, I would guess, unlike Lancaster which looks like it ought to be a nailed-on Green gain if there ever is such a thing. There isn't such a thing. Trust me, there isn't. Even if there were, I'm not sure that one would be without some clue as to how that indy vote is likely to break.

I did like the concept of a nailed on Green gain- would be a trifle unusual , I agree. 2. Hoped I'd flush out a comment or two before I posted my predictions tonight

Seems they are still concerned about future projects and traffic issues. As soon as I saw this I thought that perennial Stretton "Popular Alliance" candidate Brian Buxton would be involved; it sounds like his sort of thing. But no, he is remaining loyal to UKIP, even if not the candidate this time (on the list of assentors to Levis).

Oh and given this forum's love of bringing railways into threads (as well as Stockport pubs) my little contribution this week is that I worked with the Conservative candidate for Washburn when she briefly chaired the Peak Railway Association in the early 2000s.
I didn't hold a high regard for her abilities to inspire or lead but she is a perfect fit as a rural Tory councillor (which given Mr Teale's superb profile, is what she is will be by tomorrow).

I notice that Nene Valley ward in Northampton includes the site of the 'Blazing Car' murder from 1930.

Hoped I'd flush out a comment or two before I posted my predictions tonight I'd assumed that the indie vote would go tory in Halton (Lancaster) but after calling a friend who lives in the ward, she has said the Greens have worked hard, the Green candidate is very well respected, and although my friend has never voted Green before, tonight together with her husband she will vote Green. My guess is it will be very close.

Andrew
Many thanks for your tribute to Mark Senior in your preview. I had no idea who he was, but I appreciated his many informative contributions to this website. He was often unrealistic about Lib Dem opportunities; he was also very sensitive and sometimes awkward about recording the sad deaths of councillors.
I can confirm that Hundon ward in St. Edmundsbury has been unchanged since 1973, when it constituted as ward no. 16 of St. Edmundsbury, formed from the same 4 parishes of Clare Rural District. Back in the 1970s, there was no internet and it was difficult to collate results from all over the country. The Sampling Branch of the Office of Population, Censuses and Surveys published a book called "New Districts for Old" in September 1974, which is a paperback running to over 1000 pages. It sets out the contents of all the new wards contested in 1973, which were aggregated from existing borough and urban district wards and rural parishes under temporary orders issued by the Home Office. It sets out the polling districts and range of elector numbers in each polling district. Sadly it does not cover County Electoral Divisions, many of which were defined in terms of the previous county electoral divisions.
I believe it was an OPCS internal document only and my copy is now in a state of collapse - a 1000-page paperback is doomed to disintegrate. It was compiled by R.M. Blunden and Sheila Gray; I believe it was Sheila Gray's final project before she retired.

I think there's a copy of 'New Districts for Old' in the BL on the open access shelves (with hardback binding).

are they counting tonight in all todays by-elections? Yes most will, although due to local government budget cuts most will be using an Abacus or their fingers...

A councillor reports than Thetford counts tomorrow.
