No, @barnabymarder, it is not. Labour won a seat on Eden DC in 1979 (Penrith East), which was the first partisan gain on Eden DC since its creation.

Just Shepway and Knowsley to come in - may be counting tomorrow? Except that we haven't got the detailed figures for Billingham, Alston and Wealden, have we? These seem to have been harder to come by in recent weeks; perhaps due to less poring over, since the General Election.

Labour GAIN Eden, Alston Moor. This is apparently the first time Labour has won a seat on Eden district council. this has to be way up there in the 'areas you wouldn't think elected a Labour Councillor' list. Gained the County Council seat from an Independent in May.

Pretty sure we won at least one in 1995. Penrith West in 1995. I can't find any others. Just the one in 1995, but *two* Labour councillors elected to Eden DC in 1999. A genuine embarrassment of riches

Result in Eden, Alston Moor : Labour 407, Conservative 253. Apologies for the incorrect statement about it being Labour's first councillor in Eden, but definitely the first in a long while. As I said, the first elected this millennium The above is not the full figures unfortunately, there were two other candidates?

presumably no suitable candidate in the area. The alternative route in this situation would be to do as in Rutland . and import a candidate from outside and suffer another kind of humiliation. There might have been some backlash anyway given what had happened to the previous candidate.

Gained the County Council seat from an Independent in May. curiouser and curiouser, do the local party just have a really good ground game or is there some local factor that labour is addressing (library/hospital cutbacks etc)? It's a pretty isolated sort of place and as we know they can be prone to odd results which you have to be local to understand. As andrewteale mentions in his preview there's a fair amount of mining heritage in the area (I recommend the lead mining museum at Nenthead) and while it would seem odd for that to suddenly appear in election results now it might be relevant that it isn't just an agricultural area.

Leek East (Staffordshire Moorlands) result: LAB: 45.0% (+25.6) CON: 28.9% (+1.1) IND: 19.5% (+19.5) LDEM: 6.6% (+0.7) No UKIP/Oth as prev. And another good Labour result at the opposite end of the Pennines from Alston. Staffordshire Moorlands was not one of Labour's better results in the General Election, though not one of their worst either.

It should be noted that the 2016 by-election is the only time we had stood a candidate in the ward since Eden council was created...

Labour came close in the Cumbria CC seat back in 1989, and have polled decent votes on other occasions.
