Mark Senior has highlighted a town council by-election in another thread and has reported the result. It was held unusually on a Wednesday.
Here is some background to the by-election in St. Benedict’s ward of Glastonbury Town Council in Mendip District.
Glastonbury Town Council comprises 16 members elected from four wards, St. Benedict’s (4), St. Edmund’s (4), St. John’s (4) and St. Mary’s (4).
The council strengths were: Elected on 3 May 2007: No Description 7, Lib Dem 4, Con 3, Independent 2 Elected on 5 May 2011: Con 5, Green Party 4, Lib Dem 3, Ind 3, No Description 1
The result in St. Benedict’s ward on 3 May 2007 was: Con 337/304, Lib Dem 224, No Description 208/202/174/170/163 Elected: Con 2, Lib Dem 1, No Description 1
The result in St. Benedict’s ward on 5 May 2011 was: No Description 386, Con 314, Lib Dem 301/221/186, Green Party 273/264/261 Elected: No Description 1, Con 1, Lib Dem 1, Green Party 1
The by-election in St. Benedict’s ward on 7 November 2012 was caused by the resignation of Paul Preston (Lib Dem), after he moved to Kidderminster to help his brother care for his ailing mother.
Result: Con 243, Lib Dem 161, Green Party 120 Con gain from Lib Dem
The new council is Con 6, Green Party 4, Ind 3, Lib Dem 2, No Description 1.
