I'd be interested to know how the AfD affects each party. My current suspicion is that it hurts CDU out east, SPD in the Bonner Republik. Compared to a generic competitive federal election or compared to the last federal election? Compared to a generic but I did have to give that a think! I tended to consider the AfD as a threat to the FDP, but I suspect they no longer attract the same electorate. I have never previously considered them as a threat to the SPD until now. However, I'm beginning to wonder if they will, at least temporarily, replace Die Linke as the East German Nationalist Authoritarian Party.

It isn't, but I like to think that I'm reasonably consistent in my distaste for authoritarian types. Being a recovering Germanist and a one-time student of DDR literature, that party fills me with particular anger, especially as so many within continue to be apologists for murder. Ha, I adore this description and might have to borrow it for myself in future! It's their apologies for those that were left alive and psychologically damaged by the SED régime that bothers me more. It's also worth noting that those in Die Linke most likely to gloss over such atrocities tend to be either too young to remember (or have directly experienced, in an increasing number of cases) the suffering caused... or come from the former West.

Emnid pol: SPD 33% (+1) CDU 32% (-1) AfD 9% (-1) Die Linke 8% (nc) Greens 7% (nc) FDP 6% (nc) Others 5% (+1)
First time SPD is the strongest party in an Emnid poll since November 2006, and best SPD result since November 2005. Worst AfD result since January 2016. First left/centre-left majority since September 2015.

That is your number one priority for the election?? ** ** of course this is a "genuine question" It isn't, but I like to think that I'm reasonably consistent in my distaste for authoritarian types. I agree fully with your sentiments here. But did not the DDR version of the CDU (including one Angela Merkel) not condone what was going on?

According to the DDR-Museum in Berlin (admittedly not a totally unbiased institution), the only division ever in the Volkskammer occurred over the issue of abortion, when the East German CDU voted against as a matter of conscience. Merkel was not involved in the CDU during the dictatorship. She joined Demokratischer Aufbruch upon entering politics shortly after the fall of the Wall, which I think only merged into the pan-German CDU just before reunification.

I do take your point, John, but I'm not sure much can be laid at their door and indeed hers. Much as Foggy says, Merkel was not involved. The DDR CDU was controlled by the state to give some form of appearance of democracy. There were quite a few people who joined it so as to have some form of approved outlet for their opposition, even if it was a bit craven. They had zero power and zero control. I'm not sure any of the old DDR CDU are still involved in politics.

The Beeb reports that La Petry has held meetings with Russian MPs close to Putin.
Erika Steinbach won't be pleased.

Apropos Mrs.Petry: She - and her boy-friend - rejected a report by "Compact" (a magazin close to AfD), that the (succeeding) motion to exclude Mr.Höcke from the party was brought in by her, it might be, that she had urged a vote on that in January, which was delayed until February, when another politician came up with the same proposal. So apparently there's much more support for Höcke than expected.

They got 4.7% of the vote in 2013. Managing 8.5% this year would still constitute a huge improvement.

CDU is divided on how strongly they should play the GreeceCard. (Schulz supported EuroBonds...)

While some of AfD's AntiHöckes claim a small support for Höcke ("at worst 30%"), not the candidate of Petry and her BoyFriend Pretzell was elected as FrontRunner for the BundesTag in NRW - but Höcke's! (Though he was also supported by the moderates around prof.Meuthen.)
