Good film on the subject is Caché. British Imperial amnesia is bad enough, but the French case... good God. I once met a French chap who advised me that the reason Britain had such a chip on its shoulder was because France was the world's preeminent power until 1945. Their national myths and how they look at aspects of their own history are...interesting.

The Argentinian is "It's not colonialism because we're not British."

I see that Madame LePen is setting her stall out. Having gone to Lebanon meet religious and other leaders of what was once French colonial territory, obviously wanting to be seen in a presidential way, LePen was due to meet the Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian. His office instructed that she must attend with her head covered.....so she told him to get stuffed and cancelled the meeting. I think she did absolutely right and its a shame that Theresa May doesn't take a similar stand rather than bowing and scraping to a bunch of misogynistic head cases who live in the dark ages. www.reuters.com/article/us-france-election-lepen-idUSKBN1600R6 Would you refuse to wear a skull cap in an orthodox synagogue or refuse to remove your shoes in a Hindu temple?

The Argentinian is "It's not colonialism because we're not British." And Portugal's "it's not colonialism if you shag the locals".

It depends. If they asked, or it was culturally expected, I would out of politeness. If they demanded, or it was compulsory, I wouldn't- and wouldn't go at all if that was known in advance.

Would you refuse to wear a skull cap in an orthodox synagogue or refuse to remove your shoes in a Hindu temple? Neither, as it happens. But then they are slightly different to this. It is only directed at women, because they are women. It might all sound a bit radical for me but I actually like women....well, that won't be a surprise, but I think women are great as they are and shouldn't told what they have to wear when they are meeting some religious crank. Women are different to men....and thank God they are. Generally speaking, women are crap at some stuff and so are men. Women are brilliant at other stuff and so are men....but they tend to be different things. I don't think that women are inferior, they are just different to me. The Grand tosspot thinks that women are a sub-species of some sort. He thinks that they are not equal to men and Marine LePen was right to tell him to do one. Let's cut the crap here. Islam, whether it is because of what it says in the Quran, or whether it is the male human interpretation of what it says in the Quran, is anti-woman. I refuse to take part in this misogynistic shite and I see no reason to respect the beliefs of anyone who thinks it is alright to genitally mutilate a child, or indeed any woman. It is about time we told these people to fuck right off. Two comments, just for you to ponder. Only men have to wear skullcaps in synagogues. Le Pen requested this meeting. One might think if one was cynical that she knew exactly what was going to be asked of her by the Grand Mufti...

Was the meeting to be in a Mosque or other religious building? If it wasnt, then the comparison with skull-caps etc isnt valid. If it was, then it was an obvious stunt.

You'd have thought a bloke with the title Mufti would have a relaxed dress code.

There is going to be a debate between Le Pen, Macron, Fillon, Hamon and Mélenchon on TF1 on 20 March. Its the first time ever there is a debate before the 1st round.

I agree it could well have been a stunt for home consumption but that doesn't change the point being made, really. What, that you're happy to act as a Useful Idiot for a fascist?

What, Islam has pretty rigid rules over dress codes and/or gender? Good Lord, I had no idea! Thank you Marine Le Pen for informing me of this fact of which I would otherwise be entirely ignorant!

What, that you're happy to act as a Useful Idiot for a fascist? No...what I say makes not a shit of difference to whether this woman gets elected in France or not. I would be in panic if she were even remotely close to getting elected here. Her policies will lead to economic ruin for France, if the Euro doesn't finish it off first. I am not saying I support her. I would certainly not vote for her, but that doesn't make everything she does wrong. Is she a fascist? Only time will tell Ahhh.. so its a race between her finishing off the Euro or the Euro finishing off France?
