Leading party in each 2nd tier district in the county council elections of 1977 Some of the Welsh districts aren't the right shape on there – the Carmarthen/Dinefwr boundary is too far west; Neath seems to have annexed Pontardawe (which was in Lliw Valley) and Glyncorrwg (which was in Afan), but lost Briton Ferry and Coedffranc; Taff-Ely also seems to have shrunk, losing areas to Cynon Valley and Ogwr.

Yes this observation was made when I previously posted this map. I don't know what I based it on when the map was drawn - I think I just maybe made it up

Leading party in each 2nd tier district in the county council elections of 1977 Were elections held in the districts as shown in the map? I believe those are todays boundaries do you know if they would have been the same back then?

I believe those are todays boundaries do you know if they would have been the same back then? They look like the 1974 districts. Bath is there, as is Scunthorpe, Grimbsy, tiny-tiny York and seperate East Riding districts.

It's quite clear that those are the boundaries of 2nd tier districts as they existed in 1977.

This would benefit from including the colour-codes on the legend. And also by saying what this is a map of, rather than leaving that as an exercise for the reader.

Definitely worth leaving as an exercise for the reader. I'll do a key of the colours I think I've worked out what it is - and if I'm right your key may be slightly off (I think SDP and SDLP are the wrong way round).

I noticed shortly after I'd posted but couldn't be bothered to amend it

If my guess is right Cannock Chase should be Labour rather than Conservative.

Yes you're right. For some reason I had thought that name was only adopted in 2010 rather than in 1997

Oh, fascinating - if I've got it right. Although, thinking about it, if I'm not right, it may be even more fascinating.

Are we supposed to be thinking that Pete Whitehead’s pretty multicoloured map is any more meaningful than just a pretty map? Is it supposed to show something specific and informative and / or meaningful? If so, what?

Yes, googling a few "unusual" seats means that I've got it now too. What an inspired idea (and map)
