Rory Stewart is a Borders man, a countryside man, and slightly, er, eccentric. Anybody who thinks that he will get a significant proportion of the votes, let alone come in the top two, has got too many noodles in their elbow. Stewart's connection with the Borders seems to date only from his adoption as Conservative candidate for Penrith. He's from a Scottish family, was brought up in the far east, then lived in Perthshire before going to school in Oxfordshire and Berkshire. But he's not had much connection with London and certainly none with London local politics. So, he's something of a Taysider then, huh? I knew there was a reason why I didn't completely hate him!

When I wrote "Borders" I suppose I was thinking in the broad sense of his "Middle Land" which he did in the TV programme.

I imagine in your time, oh decent LDS, you have had to live with being irrelevant. You have rarely had to live with being despised. Between 2010-2015 I was often told by left-inclined voters that I was evil etc owing to the actions of the coalition. There are now occasional despisers (there always were) but also a lot more excitement

When did @web become Conservative? More importantly, when will Pete Whitehead become Conservative?

When did @web become Conservative? More importantly, when will Pete Whitehead become Conservative? It's an interesting question. News of various retirements brings it closer but I suspect we need Brexit actually delivered before I would fully nail my colours to the mast. I don't want to get into this serial defecting to and from the Conservatives that carlton43 and @goodoldcause have engaged in. I will say this though. There have been two occasions (1992 and 2017) where I have felt able to support my local Conservative candidate while being fairly hostile to the national party leadership and there have been two occasions (2001 and 2005) where I have voted Conservative despite serious reservations about the local candidate because I broadly supported the national party leadership. This election is only the second time (and the first was in 1987) that I am reasonably enthusiastic about both.

When did @web become Conservative? Come on in Pete..............The water's fine, the facilities are commodious and the members pretty much of one mind and feeling better than for years. Very warm welcome @web and delighted to see you here.

I endorse carlton43 's enthusiasm for Pete Whitehead joining, I'd add @goodoldcause2 and others too, and also welcome @web . It seems the conservative minded folk on the forum are beginning to coalesce in one place? If so, that can only be a positive development 🙂.

If I'd publicised my swing voter status as party affiliations I could have visited nearly all of the private party forums by now too!

Thanks, but I'm staying non-aligned for the foreseeable future. EDIT ...though I will be voting Conservative at the forthcoming general election.

I'll probably be voting Conservative, but I won't be going back into the Conservative room because I'm still no fan of Boris Johnson.
I'm mainly voting Conservative because it's the only way Brexit will happen, and I quite like my MP.

As I explained elsewhere, the change was accidental (I have a lot of other things on my mind) but once done it can only be corrected by Swan (who probably also has a lot of more important things on his mind). In due course I hope to be put back where I belong, never fear. In the meanwhile , nothing to see , move along.

This defection is partly with regret - in particular members like yellowperil are genuinely nice people who have made this hard.
However, I consider the Lib Dems a party who aren't just neutral to my interests, but antithetical to them (especially due to Brexit - I fear the Lib Dems gaining seats, which shouldn't make me a member of the group on here). Furthermore, I've become an actual Conservative Party member in recent weeks, and so for obvious reasons I can't continue in the yellow room. For this reason, I'll be defecting to the Conservative group on here, if that is possible.
I again apologise to the Lib Dems on here, who have been brilliant people. This has been a difficult decision to make personally, but I hope everyone understands.
