The composition of Middlesex County Council in 1889. I hope they didn't have to stick those numbers on their suits.

The composition of Middlesex County Council in 1889. I hope they didn't have to stick those numbers on their suits. It does make it look like an identity parade. I see Earl Lucan is number 35.

That is fascinating. He was right about population density being less than other areas that were given metropolitan status.

It looks like Greater London will record a lower homicide rate in January 2017 than Iceland. There was a rare murder in the country last month, whereas in Greater London there were only 4 according to the MurderMap website, (with London's population roughly 26 times greater than Iceland's). www.murdermap.co.uk/investigate.asp

Dr Edmund Marshall proposing West Yorks be reduced to non-met status in December 1971 I wouldn't really call that a reduction, but he did have a point if you look at western and southern Kirklees, and especially much of Calderdale. On the other hand, can you imagine the Leeds-Bradford conurbation not having been put in a Met?

They were still lumped in with Clayton in spite of this. Queensbury residents did of course get their own ward eventually - but not until 1980.

Following on some discussion about the Buckingham constituency in 1955-74 here are the facts and figures. Firstly this is what it looked like in the map with the First Periodical Review of Parliamentary constituencies. Now here's a look at the authorities from which it was made, their population in the 1961 Census, and the party composition of the council in the 1965 Municipal Year Book (reflecting the situation in the summer of 1964). Component | Population 1961 | Composition in 1964 | Borough | | | Buckingham | 4,970 | Ind 11, Lab 5 | Urban Districts | | | Bletchley | 28,300 | Lab 12, Ind 3, L 2, C 1 | Linslade | 4,139 | Ind 10, Lab 2 | Newport Pagnell | 6,020 | C 4, Ind 4, Lab 4 | Wolverton | 13,600 | Lab 15, Ind 6 | Rural Districts | | | Buckingham | 9,950 | – | Newport Pagnell | 15,550 | C 17, Ind 11, Lab 4, L 1 | Wing | 10,020 | – | Winslow | 9,770 | Non-political |
