I hadn't realised Linslade was in the same predicament as part of Chorleywood. As you can probably appreciate, I try not to pay too much attention to Bedfordshire- current or historic.

Question on University Challenge - I paraphrase - "Deriving from the Greek word for a pebble, what is the name given to the academic study of elections?"
No-one got it.

Not for the first time this series, I have sat watching that programme wondering why the question-setters could not have been so kind as to share my interests when I was on the show.
This is especially frustrating now it has reached the quarter-final stage, at which point the questions are supposed to "get harder".

The universities in question were I think Warwick and Bristol - quite shameful. I am often appalled by the dismal ignorance of the cream of our higher education system until there are questions on the physical sciences, when I quickly shut up.

I am often appalled by the dismal ignorance of the cream of our higher education system until there are questions on the physical sciences, when I quickly shut up. Indeed. Those have long been two perfectly respectable institutions who ought to be making a stronger impression on national television, lest it appear their standards are slipping. Bristol simply froze up halfway through the contest. You shouldn't be worried about that gap in your knowledge. A team of 4 (or 5, including the reserve) should be able to demonstrate a broad range of it. My captain was an astrophysicist, for instance. It is surprising that specialist colleges such as the School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine are allowed to enter, with at least 3 of the contestants often studying exactly the same subject.

I was watching and was equally shocked that between the 8 of them, not one knew psephology!
However the music round was excellent - some quality tunes on there instead of the usual classical stuff which just isnt my thing at all...

I feel like I probably ought to mention that we'll be filming our first-round UC episode this Monday - it will go truly dreadfully I'm sure. (One mathematician, two physicists and a classicist - you can see the problem.)

I'm sure this question has been asked before, so there might already be a list, but I notice that until 1950 the Tamworth seat didn't actually include Tamworth. (See www.visionofbritain.org.uk/maps/sheet/os_maps_revised_1944/Warwickshire_1931_1944 ) What other examples are there of seats not including the place they're named after? (The Boundary Commission wants to introduce a couple at the new review!)

There's a lot of dispute to be had over exactly what constitutes "the place they're named after". For instance Elmet constituency has never included Sherburn in Elmet, which is far larger than other settlements to mention that name (Barwick in Elmet and Scholes in Elmet). However the seat is named after the former Anglo-Saxon Kingdom which is actually much bigger.

It's slightly worrying that Warwick didn't get psephology because some of that team have met me. Nonetheless they're a strong quizzing university now and I hope for great things from them in future. With Foggy and krollo that makes three University Challenge people on the forum. Do we have a fourth to make up an Alumni team?
