I was part of the Hull University team in Bamber Gascoigne's last series in 1987. We beat Aberdeen and lost to University College, Oxford. Quite right, too. Well, yes - they got more points than we did.

Quite right, too. Well, yes - they got more points than we did. As a former mathematics student at University College, Oxford, I hadn't worked that out. Maybe that's why I was only a reserve.

Indeed. Those have long been two perfectly respectable institutions who ought to be making a stronger impression on national television, lest it appear their standards are slipping. Bristol simply froze up halfway through the contest. You shouldn't be worried about that gap in your knowledge. A team of 4 (or 5, including the reserve) should be able to demonstrate a broad range of it. My captain was an astrophysicist, for instance. It is surprising that specialist colleges such as the School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine are allowed to enter, with at least 3 of the contestants often studying exactly the same subject. It's slightly worrying that Warwick didn't get psephology because some of that team have met me. Nonetheless they're a strong quizzing university now and I hope for great things from them in future. With Foggy and krollo that makes three University Challenge people on the forum. Do we have a fourth to make up an Alumni team? i was a "reserve" for Univ of Essex but never made it "off the bench" (does that qualify me for the Alumni??)

I was at university during the time University Challenge was off the air, so never had any chance to appear on it. However my college has been represented on every single episode since 1994.

As someone who narrowly avoided 'reserve' status before both his interviews, I'd say it definitely does qualify you. So, we have six alumni plus two people who possibly only missed out due to poor timing. I reckon that's enough for two teams!

The details are hazy due to time, but we had two rounds of tests as auditions to select the college's side. On the first, I scored the highest- but only needed to be in the top 10 or so to get to the next round. In the next round, I did poorly and finished 5th or 6th- so missed out on being in the team itself.

The details are hazy due to time, but we had two rounds of tests as auditions to select the college's side. On the first, I scored the highest- but only needed to be in the top 10 or so to get to the next round. In the next round, I did poorly and finished 5th or 6th- so missed out on being in the team itself. That sounds harsh. The first time I auditioned, the Student Union was so disorganised that the results of the first round were essentially discarded. The second round was held in Reading Week when many of the top performers from round one were absent, allowing me to scrape fourth place almost by default. Two of my team-mates on that occasion reached the semi-finals for the same institution two years later, whilst the captain went on to appear on Mastermind... twice. I therefore conclude that I was the weak link in the team at the interview. Trying again as an undergraduate proved not to be feasible anyway. The relevant SU officer was slightly less scatterbrained when I did an MA course, but I still don't think that I was among the top four until the closing moments of the second round of try-outs on that occasion either. Fortunately in the interview that followed, the team impressed enough to be invited onto the televised stages in spite of me.

Given the scoreline, it's probably for the best that they forget it!
