He was also the unfortunate UKIP candidate who missed out on the 3rd seat in West Ecclesfield in 2016 on the drawing of lots.

No numbers yet, but: Ambridge PC (unwarded), Borsetshire: Grundy win by 3 after a recount Going from my earlier guess of an electorate of 200, and a turnout of say 15%, that's: Grundy, Emma: 18 - 55% Snell, Robert: 15 - 45% That doesn't work - it took much longer to recount the votes, although The Bull was still open and last orders had not yet been called when the result was known. Ambridge has a much larger population due to developments such as Grange Spinney, Glebelands and so on. Inkberrow in Worcestershire has an electorate of 1,762; Ambridge is smaller but over 1,000 is possible given that it includes some houses outside the village itself. We hear the turnout has increased (presumably the previous election was 2015 at the same time as the South Borsetshire DC election). A good turnout for a parish byelection would be somewhere in the 30s. So I would say the result was approximately: Emma GRUNDY (no description) 224 Robert SNELL (Independent) 221 Hmm. I'm not so sure. Campaigning resulted in the developments at Grange Spinney and Glebelands being scaled back, Grange Spinney is no more than a dozen houses. Counting the houses on the map (yes, I have the map) I get to 200 households in the village. If we assume half the population are in the village and half are in the surrounding countryside (that holds fairly well around here), that gets to a population in the 800-1000 region, an electorate in the 700-800s or so. I think this is more realistic: That's in the range of the lead being close enough to justify the Returning Officer going straight to a recount as just two missed papers would swap the result, and also a small enough total to justify 30-40 minutes rechecking and recounting every single ballot paper. Slapped wrist, though, for not calling the agents to confer before announcing, but with the absense of spoilt papers the RO probably forgot.

The thing I don't believe is the absence of any spoilt papers.

Seaton Parish council (Allerdale):
Melanie Joanne Sandwith (Ind) 301 Joyce King 229 David Arthur Bell 209
Byelection for two seats so Sandwith and King elected. No political parties involved so not sure it tells us much.

I would vote for a Grundy against a Snell. I do remember an idiot Liberal candidate in a council election in Bowden UDC many moons ago who lost by one and failed because he voted for his Conservative opponent, believing that was the proper thing to do. The Tory did not reciprocate.

The Lewes Bridge by-election is a Green Party hold
The result, when the Town Council was elected on 7 May 2015, was Green Party 9, Lib Dem 6, Independent 3.
Since then an Independent gained a seat from the Green Party in Lewes Castle on 31 March 2016. Three Green Party members are now sitting as Independent Greens.
