This brings up the perennial question of why bother with examining election results from town and parish councils when they are by definition parochial and of no concern to anyone other than the locals (and not very much even to them)? In fact some of these fought on largely party lines like this week Prescot and Ross are probably no less significant as an indicator of the public mood than, say, the West Somerset or Herefordshire results were. It is obviously necessary to draw a line for statistical purposes and the easiest place to draw it is at the boundary of principal councils, but these larger town councils at least are anecdotally interesting and of course a morale booster for Lib Dems -straws to clutch to.

In most cases that is correct but there are a relatively small number of parish/town councils which have been politically fought ( some quite ferociously ) for many years .

Haverhill Town Council, Haverhill North ward. Caused by resignation of Tom Chivers (Lab). Result: Liz Smith (Lab) elected unopposed.Straight from Vicar of Dibley? She'd have a bit of a problem with it. It isn't the Scottish Conservative MSP either. Nor the widow of the former Labour Party leader.

Burnham and Highbridge TC (Sedgemoor), Burnham South: by-election called for June 8th due to the resignation of Conservative councillor Paul Young.
This happens to be my current ward. I can't see there being much of a turnout on that date.
Parish Council now C 11, LD 5, Ind 1, vacant 1.

Nelson TC, Marsden Ward, 4th May 2017 2 seats, two Con resignations
Laura Blackburn LAB 333 Michelle Pearson-Asher CON 426 Nigel Pearson-Asher CON 401 John Rowe BNP 359 Ghulam Abbas Ullah LAB 190
turnout 42.16%
2 Con holds.
This TC by-election has slightly more significance than usual since Marsden is the only ward in England that still has a BNP Councillor at principal council level (one Brian Norton Parker). The TC ward is coterminous. The disparity in the Labour votes may say something about this small ward which is the only very heavily (>95%) white ward in Nelson. Laura Blackburn is the wife of the Labour candidate for Pendle.

Candidates announced for this one as Con, LD, UKIP. Unlike at the County Council elections, the Lib Dems have actually managed to find a decent candidate that I can see myself voting for, but GE factors will probably ensure a Tory hold.

The White Lee result is a Lab gain from Green Party, following the resignation of Liz King (Green Party).
The result in White Lee on 7 May 2015 was Green Party 394/270, Lib Dem 354/328, Con 343 - one Green Party, one Con and one Lib Dem elected. The successful Conservative candidate did not take up her seat and the town council co-opted a Lib Dem in her place.
The composition of Hebden Royd town council is now Lab 11, Lib Dem 7.
