A very odd result. No Green or Conservative candidates, even though in the previous election the Conservative topped the poll, and Green and Labour were also elected. For the LibDems, a remarkable achievement in all respects - they did not even contest the ward, last time around. (There've been several other instances around the country, where LibDems have won wards they did not previously fight). x Losing in a Parish Council by-election in a "safe" Tory ward could be a bit humiliating, so after all the bad local by-election news in 2016, perhaps the Tories could just not find a candidate?

Ilkley south LD 429 Lab 171 Bingley seat Ukip win The other ward councillor is Henri Murison. He's a former Newcastle Labour councillor from my time. He's a talentless, verbose, egomaniac who's only got where he has because of an Oxbridge degree. He's also rather strange (and this is coming from me!). I once wrote on this site or its predecessor that he was along with Nick Forbes the only Labour councillor I couldn't stand in my time. He may have improved but I doubt it.

Faversham (Abbey) in Swale Caused by the resignation of John Ogden-Starkel (Con), after deciding to emigrate to Spain in January Candidates: Independent, Con, UKIP, Lib, Green Party and Lab 7 May 2015: Con 873/854/849/711 (4 elected), Lab 700/618/613/610, Independent 643/487/465/409, Green Party 480/449 Current Council: Con 11, Independent 2, Vacant 1 / This will be interesting - the part of Swale where UKIP are weakest, Labour's only arena of relevance in the Faversham area, and I think the start of the Lib Dem return to swale... UKIP have played a poor campaign based on an assumption that the Faversham folk knew what they were doing and a painful realisation way to late that they didn't... At least we got an on the day leaflet out - as did the libs - probably their 5th literature, and the tories - I think their 4th. My prediction is a Tory hold - anything else would be a major upset - with the lib dems jumping into second and Labour just edging us out for third place. Unless there is a green standing - but nothing has been seen of any green campaign so?

There was also a byelection in Frinton last night, with the Labour candidate being Patrick Haseldine who has an interesting history as a former FCO diplomat with some theories about the Lockerbie bombing. Don't know how he got on; I don't think the result has been declared yet.

Pimp's prediction for that one not as accurate as some of his past prognostications....... Aye - I could see the Lib Dems were doing well, but this kind of collapse in the Tory vote was not expected, and it's clear that the lib dem jump has not come at Labour's expense... This throws the County Seat wide open... 25% turnout for a Town Council seat isn't bad... dreadful result for us and I have run out of told you so email and text space...

Most UKIP results at present are poor. The two parliamentary by-elections are looking ever more crucial for them.
