How can Labour plausibly win this, and what happens if they do tie or win?
For the former, possible ways I can think of include: 1. Alfred Broughton isn't as ill as IOTL, and is fit to vote. 2. Sir Arthur Irvine manages to hang on for a few more months, so Liverpool Edge Hill is neither vacant nor Liberal at the time of the vote. 3. Frank Maguire and/or Gerry Fitt go with Labour.

Tom Swain and/or the NCB driver is slightly more careful on the roads.

Amazing how such twists of fate can have such vast consequences.

The INLA attack Airey Neave a week earlier? On a side note, didn't the October '74 Parliament have more deaths than any other? It certainly seems like it from where I am sitting.

Callaghan would have had to gone to the country six months later anyway, the real difference would have been had he gone to the country in the Autumn of '78.
