I am now most of the way through watching the BBC coverage and really can't recommend it - little on the actual results, few declarations, an awful lot of Andrew Neil being macho and talking heads talking guff. I almost entirely used Sky on the night and thought it wasn't bad, except when they covered up their rolling reel of results with lasting 'flashes' saying things like 'Conservatives reach 150 seats', so for example I didn't realise Raab had held my own constituency for about two hours. John Bercow, presumably regarded as their coup, wasn't as bad as I feared (at least he knew all the seats and MPs) unless and until issues concerning himself (bullying, rulings) were brought up, when he sort of proved the point. Thanks for the tip. I watched Sky and recorded BBC, so perhaps I won’t watch it! Yes, I completely agree with the flashes point, missing results was very annoying. And I think during those flashes they might have put gains on a ticker above the flash but not holds. Stupid really. I must admit that I muted it when they went to the prolonged questioning of Bercow. From what I've seen so far I think ITV's coverage may have been the best this time, which is interesting because a few elections back it was often generally viewed as being the weakest of the three TV election shows.

46,000 is obviously a wrong figure isn’t it?

46,000 is obviously a wrong figure isn’t it? It may be right. Election night shows don't get that many viewers, sadly, and I think the BBC gets the lion's share of them.

It’s occurred to me how Sky might be inflating their figures: in past elections their overseas affiliates, Sky News Australia for example, have taken the UK coverage - back in 2010 my Democratic friend in Minnesota was able to watch via Fox News, so if they’re including overseas figures then they may be getting in the 3 million plus ballpark.

I don't believe 6.1 million people are watching the BBC's election show apart from at 10pm when the exit poll is released. The numbers must drop off pretty rapidly after that.

I think the 6.1 million is for the rest of the broadcast, so yes, you had a drop after the exit poll and maybe a few results to see whether it was accurate, and then a spike at circa 7.30-8.00am as people tuned in to see what, as Del Boy would say, the final score was.

It could be "watched at least part of". At the count we saw the first 90 seconds or so on the council screens, and then concentrated on the verification for the next two hours, then watched the next couple of hours while waiting through the sorting and counting, and dozens of people drifted in and out and watched for a handful of minutes before wandering off again.

Off topic since this is a link to the Radio 4 election night show, available until a month after the election. (Does this work in countries outside the UK?) www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000c4zz

The one big thing I like about Sky's coverage is the vidiprinter which leaves the four(?) most recently declared seats list at the bottom of the screen, which the other broadcasters don't have. From what I've seen of it, Channel 4's coverage was quite amateurish - they weren't privy to the exit poll so had to wait until it was public to announce it (it took about a full minute to get the seat numbers through), didn't seem to have anyone at counts and had very limited analysis of the results. I don't understand why they had a studio audience either. I know they were trying to cater to people who may not follow politics regularly or wanted a more lighthearted take on the results, but I can't imagine people were really able to follow what was going on too well. I'm not surprised their numbers were down as much as it was.

I tried to record Sky News's election show but my DVD machine wouldn't cooperate. Sky News don't like their election shows being uploaded to YouTube usually. I tried uploading the 1997 Sky election show once and it was taken down almost straight away. Just out of interest please AJS did that 1997 Sky broadcast confirm what I put in my exit poll thread that Sky forecast a 175 Labour majority before the results? Thanks

Yesterday, Sky News themselves put their own coverage of the 2019 general election results onto YouTube: Andrew_SPerhaps they could be persuaded to put older shows online. If they can do this for 2019 there seems to be no reason they shouldn't put up their coverage for other elections.
