The preview has changed! It looks as though you can alter the number of seats in a region (the preview shows 60 in Wales) which will make it far easier to play around with the number of seats in parliament or design fantasy regional constituencies or design a map for a completely different electoral system!

Make sense, given the number of seats isn't 100% sure yet.

I'm more excited by the export button, the old export system wasn't always the best, but it looks like the new system might be an improvement. Coupled with notional results and the ability to alter seats I'll be tempted to create fantasy regional assemblies when the thing is actually out. Should be a breeze to have a column for proposed seats and then a "sumif" in Excel for adding up notionals.

It would certainly make it a lot less time-consuming to calculate notional results than it was before! I keep thinking that I should get a life, but I'm not sure I'd know what to do with it.....

The other takeaway from that screenshot is that it allows a 10% deviation, so I'm assuming that as well as the number of seats, we'll be able to vary the permitted deviation.
But one question: from which date is the electoral figure of 2181841? It's less than the 2.3 million registered in Wales for the 2017 election. It would be nice to be able to use more up-to-date electorates.

As far as I know the last review is the only source for the full set of parliamentary electorates at ward level.

I wonder if it'll have the old Scottish wards or the new ones.

I wonder if it'll have the old Scottish wards or the new ones. It is using the December 2015 wards and Westminster parliamentary electorates, as we don't have a comprehensive more recent source at ward level. I did consider extrapolating from the 2019 parliamentary constituency electorates, but I think the numbers would likely be well out by the time we get the December 2020 electorates for the next review. This is not just due to the likely ward by ward variations within constituencies, but also the fact that the register that follows a general election usually sees a fall off in registration that is not evenly distributed.

Here is a plan I prepared earlier under the relaunched Boundary Assistant (new Bristol & Gloucestershire constituencies, part 1):

Here is a tip for displaying the higher level boundaries. Since the boundary files load asynchronously I can't specify the order on start up, so I am just showing the wards. I find the best view is achieved by switching on the local authorities first, then the current constituencies (if required), then switch the wards off and back on again so that they overlay the higher levels.
