I have an idea.
Create a combined electoral register for the entire country. List everybody by name rather than address. Divide it into 600 (or however many seats you want) approximately equal segments, in surname order. Common surnames would be subdivided according to first name. Constituency 1 would therefore be (e.g.) everybody from AA to Abbott. Constituency 600 would be most of the Z names. There might be some geographical bias within some constituencies (e.g.t he McDonald constituencies, or the Jones constituencies) but overall, each MP would represent a broad range of people and classes from different parts of the country.
Or
Each constituency is a collection of fractal fragments (Bophuthatswana-style). There are a few hundred thousand fragments (each being perhaps a road or a tower block). Each MP would represent a constituency made up of a few hundred fragments.
Or
366 constituencies, with the electorates being determined by date of birth. The 29th February constituency would be much smaller than the others, but would still be allowed to exist as a psephological curiosity (like the Western Isles).

I would love a section for fictional constituencies from novels, films or television drama!!!
Here are the constituencies from Jeffrey Archer's First Among Equals -
Charles Gurney Seymour (Con - Sussex Downs)
I assume this is what is now Arundel & South Downs?
Simon Kerslake (Con – Coventry Central 1964 – Feb 1974 and Pucklebridge Oct 1974 -)
I assume that this would have been more or less bound by where the central ring road is. I have no idea where Pucklebridge was? If you Google it, there is no such place.
Raymond Gould (Lab – Leeds North)
I assume that Leeds North was the more inner city parts of Leeds NE and Leeds NW. Given that both Leeds NE and Leeds NW were strongly Conservative in the period that the novel/ TV series was set (60s to 80s) Leeds North may have been a bellweather marginal and not a 10,000 + Labour majority. Clearly it would be a very safe Labour seat today.
Andrew Fraser (Lab and then SDP - Edinburgh Carlton)
Carlton Hill was in Edinburgh North till 1983 and then Edinburgh East since then. Fraser captured this seat from the Conservatives in 1964, which could seem logical, and held it in 1983 as SDP.

In the same novel there is a left wing Labour MP who represented "Liverpool Dockside" and a Conservative who represents "Littlehampton" before "Bognar Regis & Littlehampton" was created.

There are no conceivable boundaries of a Coventry Central seat that could have been Conservative held in 1966. Leeds North is as you say plausible as a Labour seat if it included the inner city territory only, but even then areas like Headingley and Chapel Allerton were quite strongly Tory in the 1960s. I supposet could have included Harehills and included the city centre

I believe this would be true of Leeds North if it is to be created in the next round of boundary changes (although this causes problems elsewhere in the Leeds area due to the variation in ward electorates). I furthermore believe that Greg Mulholland would have captured it in 2005 but lost it in 2015 a la Manchester Withington (in real life, he held Leeds North West due to anti-Labour tactical voting).

I've posted about this sort of thing before (I think). If you'd like me to look up some of the books that I have just let me know.

I can't remember if I've mentioned my proposal for constituencies on the Onion Rings principle.
Start with a definitive, properly surveyed map of the UK, with the coastline defined as it is at high tide. Define the location of each residential dwelling as being the position of the main entrance or front door. Measure precisely the distance between each residence and the nearest bit of coastline, in a straight line. Start from the coastline and work inwards. The first residence is the one nearest to the coastline. Add residences, one by one, to the first constituency, until the combined electorate is enough for the quota for one constituency. Start the second constituency by the same method, adding residences inwards.
You end up with 600 (or however many you want) constituencies, in concentric rings.
There would have to be an agreed definition of where rivers stop and where the sea starts (e.g. the Thames would be considered to be inland as far as the edge of Greater London). It may be suitable to treat separately Northern Ireland and the various islands round the coast.

I have no idea where Pucklebridge was? If you Google it, there is no such place. There is no way that the area inside the ring road would have had the population to be a constituency on its own.

I think 'Pucklebridge' in real life would have been Mid Sussex (the 1974-83 version without the town of East Grinstead). Sussex Downs' equivalent would have been Arundel & Shoreham during the first years in which the book is set. As for Liverpool Dockside, that would have been Liverpool Scotland (later Liverpool Scotland Exchange and now Liverpool Riverside).
There were no Conservative-held seats at all in Coventry from 1964-74, and Coventry did not get reduced to three seats until 1997 (which did push out a real-life Conservative MP called John Butcher)

Indeed it increased from 3 seats to 4 in 1974 rather than suffering a reduction in seats as occurred in the book

Plan oust Farron: Split Kendal into 5. Furthermore all 5 of these seats must be isolated from windemere which is stuck with workington and maryport. Coniston is isolated from both windermere and kendal and stuck with Whitehaven and Barrow. Don't think any seat is of the 7 is remotely winnable. North Lanks and Cumbria have 8 seats, 4 tory 4 labour I believe. Oh... If only redistricting was like the US and we could gerrymander the hell out of the opposition UPDATED 2018 CUMBRIA-LANCASHIRE OUST FARRON!!!!!Carlisle North & Kendal North 71217 Carlisle South & Penrith 71454 Windmere & Workington 71904 Whitehaven & Ulverston 71525 Barrow, Morecambe & Kendal West 73978 Heysham, Fleetwood & Kendal South West 77273 Lancaster & Kendal South East 76719 Colne, Clitheroe & Kendal East 77902 Blackpool North & Cleveleys 75104 Blackpool South & Lytham 75981 Preston West & Fylde 71596 Preston East 77564 Burnley & Nelson 77228 Accrington 72674 Blackburn 72816 Rossendale & Darwen 77585 Chorley 78114 Leyland 78311 West Lancashire 76361

My fantasy is where we see Tim Farron without a winnable seat. Anyone fancy coming up with this piece of erotica. I hope he wins and eventually become leader. Your dream may come true were my "Morecambe Bay" seat from upthread ever happened You said above in 2013 you hope Farron becomes leader, but have since quit the Lib Dems due to him becoming leader. ?

You've misunderstood my point, largely because I haven't written it very well. I hoped Faron would become leader for the same seat-losing reasons you had mentioned. I just muddled up the grammar. I am still not a member of the party.

This contiguous seat would probably mess up the rest of the Cumbria and north Lancashire constituencies, but it is technically legal. Although its main settlements would be Penrith and Ulverston, since it stretches from Lazonby* in Eden and Cumberland to Dalton-in-Furness, I propose the name Rubbish Bonds CC. * Yes, I'm aware the surname of the alleged 'actor' was Lazenby. (Oh, and the relative rubbishness is subjective but seems a widely held opinion. Personally I like OHMSS and quite enjoy Licence to Kill.)

May I present: Brafield and Breaston CC (71,754 electors)! All right, I realise the latter town is pronounced 'Bree-ston' and the former may well be 'Brayfield' among locals, but still...

Something something blatant gerrymandering... Well yes, although it's a contiguous seat and within the quota, it wouldn't hold up to scrutiny. I could therefore have also posted this in the 'Pitchfork Bait' thread. I note now that in my haste to make the joke, I isolated East Goscote ward in Charnwood. Adding it doesn't even come close to bringing the seat over quota, though.
