The farcical Rochdale By-election
Green and Labour have disowned their candidates. Others are colourful in a way that is repulsive to many. Is there anyone left to vote for? Who would you vote for?
I'd go for the sensible option of Raven Rodent Subortna (OMRLP), yes sensible in the context of this by-election and it would be my first time voting for the Official Monster Raving Loony Party.
I've assumed you will vote.

It is a poser and no mistake. Some will sit on hands in disgust. Some will spoil their ballot. Some will vote for a silly candidate to show contempt with the position. All of those are understandable but clearly WRONG decisions. They are all narcissistic and personal and a bit childish. This is between two candidates so that must have the attention. Both are repellent. Which does the most or the least harm and what is one trying to achieve? It is a poser and I have not decided. I am leaning towards Galloway for reasons I shall set out later.

George Galloway can and would be a pressure valve in Parliament, his diatribes reflect how many (including myself) feel about NATOs operations in the Middle East, which makes street protest and membership of fringe groups less attractive as it can be seen that the legislative is fed the polemic already.

I don't personally have any great objection to Otten or Ali. Upset about Gaza is widespread and much off the cuff response has been over the top. I don't see this as malign anti-semitism. And criticism of religion is fair game for me, whatever the religion. I think sometimes parties need to be more robust (see also Conservatives in Wellingborough) rather than running away and hiding.
On the other hand Galloway is an exceptionally nasty piece of work, and Danczuk isn't much better.
If you are in favour of running away, then you can vote for the inoffensive Conservative or Liberal Democrat candidates. Or if this is also beyond the pale, why not cast a protest vote for the Rodent?
At least you have a good choice at this election, which isn't always the case.

Are we sure the Lib Dem isn't a wrongun too? These type of seats do attract them, David Ward anyone?
As far as I can see the only sensible choice is OMRLP.

I'd be very tempted to not vote but I would feel bound to cast a vote against Galloway. And sadly Ali as well.

I would normally vote for the Lib Dem candidate.
The intervention of Galloway would probably have made me consider a tactical anti-Galloway vote, but the revelations re Ali might stop me doing that; though I'd be seeking a little more on what exactly he has said/done.

I'd probably go Lib Dem, as they seem to have increased campaigning recently and out of all the five candidates who have even a slight chance of winning, they're probably the best.

I've gone for LibDem though I don't envy the poor people of Rochdale having that choice to make.

It wasn't a Lib Dem focus til yesterday. It is at least relatively more of one now. |

I'd welcome anyone to win here over Galloway and Ali (in particular).
Three years ago (around the time of Hartlepool and B & S), I wouldn't have written the Tories off here. In 2024, it's a different story. As for the Lib Dems, they have drifted away from urban, working class seats over the last three general elections (at least at national level). But I'd like them to mount a challenge - as Starmer/Labour have been given an easy ride for too long in urban, multicultural England.
