Chris Patten (Lord Patten of Barnes) is standing down as Chancellor, so there will be an election for Chancellor in the autumn.
There have been some very hotly contested elections in the past, notably 1987 (Edward Heath v Lord Blake v Woy Jenkins), 1925 (Herbert Asquith v Viscount Cave) and 1960 (Harold Macmillan v Sir Oliver Franks). Being the formal head of England's third best university is quite attractive to senior politicians.

How does Hull University select it's Chancellor?

I was annoyed by the TV news report which reported the result by telling us that he "was an also-ran" without telling us how many votes he got.

If I recall rightly, did you have to vote in person? It looks like electronic voting will be possible this time around.

If I recall rightly, did you have to vote in person? Yes, and in our correct academic gowns! (There were university staff loaning them out for the few minutes it took to go and vote)
