Sandwell is / was similar. "You can't run someone from Oldbury in Wednesbury", that sort of thing. Sandwell was based on six previous UDCs I think, and it retained that sense of being parochial Sandwell was essentially a merger of West Bromwich county borough and Warley county borough, but Warley was itself a recent creation at that time, and as you suggest a merger of Smethwick county borough and several urban districts. West Bromwich had been a county borough for longer but had had Tipton UD added on and maybe Wednesbury too. But Sandwell still lacks coherence as a borough, more so than any other of the West Midlands metropolitan districts. It's arguable that Smethwick and West Bromwich could be joined to Birmingham with little upheaval, and Cradley Heath and Tipton already feel like satellites of Dudley. There's very little of Sandwell that wouldn't easily fit into an adjoining borough. The question is perhaps whether those boroughs would want what they were offered.

Nobody wants Tipton. Simple as. Harsh. You've clearly not been there. I must admit that I have family buried in Tipton cemetery.

You've clearly not been there. I must admit that I have family buried in Tipton cemetery. The old Tipton library looks a bit like Westminster Cathedral!
Perhaps these posts should be moved to the Sandwell thread?

It looks like a proper effort given one of their candidates gives an address in Durham (I suppose Sunderland is in Durham). It was, anyway, and in pre-1983 general election studies both Sunderland constituencies were listed under County Durham. Also Durham City and the surrounding area was noted as an area for Sunderland support as opposed to Newcastle United. It is on Wearside after all! It’s rather different now due to outmigration to County Durham from Newcastle to areas such as Chester-le-Street. Sorry hijack the Black Country thread.

The way they talk about Washington, you'd think it was Narnia! I get the whole "local" obsession happens everywhere but we do seem to have a particularly bizarre and extreme breed of parochialism in the North East. It may be sacrilege to say this but it's the sort of thing that really makes me miss living down south... For an interesting critique on that parochialism, I would recommend reading the Newcastle sections of John Ardagh's book Tale of Five Cities.

I think a level of parochialism is fair enough in *local* elections.
