Fascinating set of results. The Tories came within 100 votes of losing every seat they fought (Drayton and Farlington...wut!) and Labour managed to bungle Cosham and lose in St Judes. They will be pleased with their result in Eastney and Craneswater though.
PiP will be delighted and the Fratton result shows potential in the South. The LD's will be pleased as well I am sure...7 wins with some tricky holds plus gaining the last seat in E&C which means there isn't a single Tory Councillor left in the Portsmouth South constituency. There were some stonking holds as well, Baffins is a ward which would naturally lean Tory/PiP/Reform/Kipper in many places yet Darren Sanders managed to win by about 1000...it's witchcraft I tells ye.
Anyway on a local level at least we can all pause and take a breath. No elections next year.

A local news site reports that verification has been completed and the council count proper is underway. What a slick operation? Runs just like clockwork, but considerably slower.

We did our full range of Dickensian puns last year. Perhaps something related to Peter Sellars instead?

Is there a glitch in the matrix? I am sure I posted some frothing and it seems to have disappeared...🫤 Oh no. I have posted it in the wrong thread. Twat. To sum up: At the start of the election the situation was as follows in terms of overall seat numbers: LD 18, Cons 8, Lab 7, the George Madgwick Party (PiP) 6 and Non aligned independents (aka the Corkery Crew) 3. The election saw as follows: Liberal Democrat 7 seats (+1) 27% vote share Portsmouth Independents Party 4 seats (+3). 23% vote share Labour Party 2 seats (0) 28% vote share The Conservative Party Candidate 1 seat (-4) 16% vote share The Green Party 0 seats 5% vote share Reform UK 0 seats 1% vote Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition 0 seats. < 1% vote share. So the wards which "changed hands": Eastney and Craneswater: LD gain from Con (The last Tory left in the Portsmouth South constituency) Charles Dickens: Lab gain from Ind (elected as Lab) - so a technical hold. Hilsea: PiP gain from Conservative Copnor: PiP gain from Conservative Cosham: PiP gain from Conservative Source: democracy.portsmouth.gov.uk/mgElectionResults.aspx?ID=17&RPID=28714621 So afterwards LD 19; PiP 9; Labour 8; Conservative 4; Independents (including a Labour aligned Independent) 2. NOC continues. The AGM is a week Tuesday so the horse trading will take place between now and then. So a few observations: Labour 140 behind the LD in Eastney and Craneswater with the Tories falling to 4th (!), the Tories squeezing home in Drayton and Farlington by 122 from the PiP and the Labour candidate for Portsmouth North in the general beaten by PiP in Cosham (by 140) with the Tories a fair way back in 3rd. Meanwhile the LD's survived an assault in St Judes from Labour with Hugh Mason surviving by 45. And in a sign that PiP are now eyeing the south..they beat Labour into 2nd place in Fratton. The eagle eyed amongst you will notice the situation where Labour achived a higher % of the vote in the city for 2 seats which speaks volumes about ruthless targetting; where the repective parties strength lies; FPTP; crap Labour squeezing (Cosham) etc etc. The biggest majorities of the night were achieved by George Madgwick (PiP) in Paulsgrove (1200), Darren Sanders (LD) in Baffins (1050); Kimberley Barret (LD) in Milton (900) - a ward which had been targetted by Labour in past years (Steve Pitt survived by 30 in 2022 and Gerald Vernon Jackson won by 320 last year). Normally the gurus and anoraks will start computing for the following year with split wards etc - however this time it's academic for 2 reasons: 1) next year is a well deserved year off in local election terms and 2) the boundaries are changing so 2026 is all ups. I will reiterate my personal observation that in the last month I received more leaflets from the Tories in my part of Copnor than I had received in the previous 12 months. Whether that was to try and restrict the scale of the defeat or they genuinely thought they were going to win is a matter of conjecture.

Groundhog day here for Labour irrespective of how badly the Tories do, isn't it? 👍😉😬. Anyhow the Portsmouth Politics Podcast (to be found on YouTube- give them a bump) had some interviews last night with the respective leaders and George Madgwick indicated that he fancies being "leader of the opposition" so that indicates that the minority LD administration may continue. And there are some looming metaphorical landmines floating in Langstone Harbour to shortly navigate (Local plan time, boundary commission, Tipner West development etc etc).
