Maybe Pete was suggesting that Ed has ‘Ballsed’ up.
Of course, the real Ed Balls would happily dance away at the Blackpool ballroom with Labour’s result today.

Still no results released officially. Perhaps they are waiting until all are in then will publish them all at once. They didn't do that last year. I find it irritating. Edit. I take that back. They have started to appear mygov.elmbridge.gov.uk/mgElectionResults.aspx?ID=51&RPID=529508490Cobham is a C hold compared to LD gains of the other two in the ward. (It will no longer be in the Esher & Walton top target constituency, though). It does however make it less likely the LD will get an overall majority on the council if the rumour about Claygate is true. Third: LD 7 (+4), Con 3 (-3), Hinchley Wood / Weston Green Residents' Associations 1, Thames Ditton / Weston Green Residents' Association 1, Weybridge & St. George's Independents 1, Esher Residents Association 1, The Molesey Residents Association 1 (-1), Independent 1 (+1), The Walton Society 0 (-1) Council: LD 23 (+3), Con 9 (-3), Hinchley Wood / Weston Green Residents' Associations 3, Thames Ditton / Weston Green Residents' Association 3, Esher Residents Association 3, The Molesey Residents Association 3, Weybridge & St. George's Independents 2, Independent 1 (+1), The Walton Society 1 (-1) %, according to the council: LD 38.6%, Con 30.9%, Residents 18.7%, Labour 4.9% Independent gain over Liberal Democrat in: Claygate (by 162 votes) Liberal Democrat gain over Conservative in: Hersham Village (by 140 votes) Walton N (by 722 votes) Walton S (by 369 votes) Liberal Democrat gain over The Molesey Residents Association in: Moseley E (confirms by-election gain; by 334 votes over Con; no Resident candidate) Liberal Democrat gain over the Walton Society in: Walton C (by 246 votes) Close holds: Cobham and Downside (Con hold by 122 votes over LD) Esher (Resident hold by 158 votes over Con) Oatlands and Burwood Park (Con hold by 129 votes over LD)

that is the case in this borough yes. We used to win regularly in at least one, sometimes 2, wards in Walton, one or two occasionally in Molesey, and regularly in Hersham North. Since Irene Hamilton (whom I knew very well) lost the last of these in Hersham, the party has basically collapsed locally & there is no sign of activity resuming to any meaningful degree. Whereas in Chertsey & Egham Labour is very much on the up

In Hersham North it was mostly low-rise council estate and also in the West Molesey wards when won. In Walton North it was a mixture of council estate (some of it more modern & not in great condition) and some terraced housing. The terraced housing has distinctly gone up in the world since the 1980s when that ward was very regularly Labour and Labour were able to win the Walton-on-Thames division for Surrey County Council (in fact I helped there when we won in 1985 as I was working in Esher at the time. As it happened, I knew the successful Labour candidate from Arts for Labour).

Thanks Mike I didn't know that! I remember Jimmy Pursey addressing the Cambridge Union Society during my time at the university. I didn't go though, so I can't tell you what he said.

Hersham South on the other hand is far from Cockney. It ranges mainly from pretty comfortable to ultrawealthy and used to be very heavily Conservative.

A lot of Sham 69's stuff hasn't aged terribly well, but they still had their moments. Now, the Cockney Rejects - they really *were* crap

I was a fan. Most of the vinyl singles I own (though I haven't had any means to play them for decades) were bought in the late 70s. One of these is Questions & Answers by Sham 69 which I thought rather thought spoke to my philosophy at the time (basically anti-parental and teacher authority) and still does to an extent today. In my defence I was 10

Sham 69 were followed by a large group of noisy and mostly very racist skinheads. Jimmy Pursey felt intimidated by them. He pleaded to get the band onto the lineup for the Rock against Racism free concert in Victoria Park, London in 1978. He was not invited as there were fears that it would attract his NF supporting skinhead followers to the event.
In the end, the Clash who ended the concert invited Pursey up to jam along with White Riot.

Now, the Cockney Rejects - they really *were* crap Jimmy Pursey's World Cup 2006 song, which was basically Hurry up Harry with the word "Harry" changed to "England" and "we're going down the pub" changed to "we're gonna win the Cup", is one of the great half-assed cash ins on a major sporting event, though. It even got to the top ten. I applaud the gall!
