Some of those turnouts are absolutely horrific. Indeed, they are way too high.

Some of those turnouts are absolutely horrific. I am wondering if there might be an error in translation somewhere. In France they usually talk about the abstention rate, which is (by definition) 100% minus the turnout. Has that map done the same?

Turnout is lower in cities than in rural areas, which seems to me coherent.

I'm quite surprised to see that Algeria still makes most European citizens get a visa to visit. Bizarre for a country that has decided it wants a piece of the tourist trade.

As someone who used to do a lot of travelling before the coronavirus, it's not the visa itself, but how much hassle there is to get it, and how much it costs.

You'd think they'd be keen to make it easier to go. There was a fascinating article somewhere last year in which the Algerian authorities noted that a world with less flying was a potential opportunity for them to grab tourists from France and Italy in particular, keen to go somewhere a bit different and a bit edgier. Or are they genuinely that fearful of subversion from abroad?

It's primarily based on the old post colonial chip on the shoulder mindset of reciprocity. India also has or used to have such a system. Quite counterproductive but the bureaucratic answer always was that it'll be against national pride to permit visa free travel to those who don't reciprocate. I think things have changed in India and an easier system introduced but I am not very sure.

As far as I know, British citizens require an e-visa, unless they're originally Pakistani in which case the rules are tougher, which allows a visit for up to six months.

Getting an evisa is now quite easy, and getting through immigration is also now very easy at the main ports of entry.

Some of those turnouts are absolutely horrific. Certain parties are banned as quoted below. The Algerian Constitution (as of 1996) bans the formation of any party "founded on a religious, linguistic, racial, sex, corporatist or regional basis" or violating "the fundamental liberties, the fundamental values and components of the national identity, the national unity, the security and integrity of the national territory, the independence of the country and the People’s sovereignty as well as the democratic and republican nature of the State.
