Boris has a net approval rating of +39% I wonder how Robert Peston and Piers Morgan can compute that.

Boris has a net approval rating of +39% I think the public are very supportive of the leadership during these times of national emergency - hence the approval rating. The media's criticism of him and his party is helping him too.

The whole country is in the middle of a severe mental breakdown. You, and people like you, tried to use your position to quash the referendum result. You, in particular, used your taxpayer funded position for life to compare our open and tolerant little island to 1930's Germany. People noticed. You're reaping the whirlwind. Enjoy!

Our falling poll numbers have more to do with the coronavirus solidifying support for political leaders with more name recognition than our acting leader (as everyone's who's reasonably well-known gets a bit of an approval bump - which may or may not last - so long as they don't obviously botch the response a la Bolsonaro). That said, I'm sure you (or rather, Labour) could make some kind of argument about how we really are reaping the whirlwind because Evil LibDem Austerity (and *specifically* LibDem austerity) is responsible for the coronavirus hitting us. I wouldn't be half surprised to see some uncertain projections about how we would have coped with more PPE extrapolated into 'Nick Clegg and Ed Davey killed 10,000 doctors!!!' Tweets.

Tweets. while yes the Lib Dems falling numbers are probably to do with the country uniting behind Boris, I suspect there's two other reasons too. Starmer is very popular amongst Lib Dem voters. The 2019 Lib Dem coalition is heavily dominated by Remainers and not all of them are naturally Lib Dem. As Brexit is replaced by Covid 19 as the main headline its only inevitable those voters will ebb away too. and yes the coalition did the Lib Dems heavy damage which is not news to anyone. But like 2019 that was self inflicted, not because of the coalition but the 2010 Lib Dem coalition like 2019 was made up of people who aren't naturally Lib Dem. Arguably who is naturally Lib Dem but the Lib Dems didn't craft a voter base it crafted the party around the voters which works until you're in government and voters in Manchester Withington and Torbau want different things. Vince Cable imagined shaping the Lib Dems into a UK version of the FDP and it was undone, once again in favour of defining their differences to others to win over voters

The Lib Dems appeal for the last year has been based around a battle that has been lost and that nobody's talking about anymore. To see them down a few points is hardly surprising. Having a leader nobody knows probably doesn't help either.
As for the government, they will probably be judged ultimately not on how they manage the virus, but more on how the deal with the economic fallout from it afterwards. Economically, they may have dodged a bullet in terms of the potential negative effects of Brexit being more hidden, but they've got a fucking massive missile coming towards them to deal with.
