Maybe it's in the spirit of Henry Root, who once had a letter published in the Evening Standard saying simply: "I wish to protest most strongly about everything". I've never heard of Henry Root until this post. What a story. Very Flann O'brien. Somewhere upstairs I’ve got at least two volumes of his letters that were collated and published as paperbacks.

Quiz question to drag this vaguely back on topic: What's the connection between Henry Root and a very prominent Parliamentary defector?

Now I am in a dilemma because I need to choose between trawling through the Root book to find the relevant reference, and continuing to read the book about Barbara Castle.

Try The Best of Myles, written under O'Brien's pseudonym Myles na Gopaleen. It's a collection of the best of his columns written for the Irish Times.

His exchange of correspondence with Esther Rantzen is worth looking out. His alter ego, William Donaldson, was a fascinating character as well. Did he tell her it was nothing to do with the gas board? "Is it about a bicycle?" he asked.

It's a collection of the best of his columns written for the Irish Times. Worth being aware as well that nobody actually knows how much he wrote for the Irish Times, as he sent letters under lots of different names. Including at least one set of correspondence which was a long argument between two of his own pseudonyms!

The four Independents on Somerset County Council have split into two groups
Dean Ruddle ( Con- Ind- Con- Ind), Somerton and Neil Bloomfield ( Con- Lib Dem,- Ind) , Martock have become the Somerset Independent Group
John Hunt ( Bishops Hull) and Hugh Davies ( Watchet and Stogursey) are the Independent group. Those 2 have always been Independent.

Googling to find out who "Flann O'Brien" was, meant I got links to Nonsense literature, and thus to James Joyce ("Finnegans Wake"), and thus I discovered that James Joyce's wife was Norah Barnacle. Which is brilliant! Equestrian cement

Seems that Mike Gapes is back in the Labour Party (or if he isn't, he's donating a reasonable amount of money to his local party!).
Not necessarily surprising given that there's a leadership election now and he was very much pushing himself as the "True Labour" candidate rather than the Change UK candidate in the General Election.

More likely it's that he forgot to cancel his standing order paying in to the 200 club.

Given what he said about the party and his successor I think that would be rather odd, but then this is Gapes. He did a lot worse than he had imagined.

I remember, 'cause I am getting old, that Shirley Williams forgot to cancel her Standing Order to Labour for a while after she joined the SDP.
