I see that Salma Yaqoob is now a Labour member (and standing to be their West Midlands mayoral candidate) - not sure if that was ever reported here.

Most of us in the party had no idea she had joined. It is an entirely predictable development though.

If Salma Yaqoob gets the Labour nomination for West Midlands Mayor, the Tories are guaranteed to hold the Mayoralty.
I also imagine that many Labour people would be reluctant to campaign for someone who was standing against the party only two years ago, and was briefly the leader of a rival political party.
At this rate, Labour might as well go the whole hog by readmitting George Galloway and nominating him to succeed Sadiq Khan as London Mayor!

Fun fact - The PD is the legal successor to both the Christian Democrats and the Communist Party!

She would probably be a more prominent figure than Rarely Seen Roger, but would be a worse constituency MP, she didn't do casework or meetings where she wasn't in the limelight etc. Argue with the anti-gay campaigners. I very strongly doubt it. You will no doubt come back with your usual piffle, I would remind you that I actually know her - in fact literally I sat behind her for her entire council career - when she indulged us in her presence.

Yes, but you are a very right wing LibDem, so your view must be taken in that context. I can assure you that I think your politics are typical of your repellent party- far worse than "piffle"

Weak stuff, Mike, I thought you could do better than that

It's his opinion, which I will regard with the general level of seriousness of other right wing LibDems. Of course, there is one obvious reason why you wouldn't like her .... I'm sure you think Jo Swinson is a credible politician but I don't have to have met her to know that isn't the case!

"Your view of her in person is less valid than my view of LibDems" Or something. You've lost me, Mike. I really couldn't care less what someone of Ian's politics thinks about anyone on a personal level frankly. It's hardly an unbiased view!

Perhaps we could have Watson abolished instead?

I'm sure you think Jo Swinson is a credible politician but I don't have to have met her to know that isn't the case! Assuming you're referring to her religion, that's not a problem - she's clearly not the submissive woman that the beards would prefer. I have issues with her political stances in all kinds of other ways, though she did earn a bit of "respect" for turning against the odious Galloway. And I think I remember her writing about exploring other religions - I'm not sure how seriously - but deciding to remain within islam on the somewhat shaky basis that it gave women more rights than the others, a claim that is astonishingly hard to justify when looked at in the round. I'd have to question her decision-making on that basis alone.

It was abolished because half the clubs left it over a vote-rigging scandal.

Looks like Labour conference is going to be fun ... Watson is actually turning up this year, then? (he hasn't attended an NEC meeting since the spring, either)
