And thus the Conservatives brief spell as largest party in Edinburgh ends again... until the next Nat gets kicked out anyway.

Of course switching Parties now does give him around a year to look for a more friendly Ward in 2020 should he wish.

Not quite sure where to post this, but I've been reading the (largely) splenetic responses to the Chequers proposals on Conservative Home, and am wondering where all these furious people who say they will never vote Conservative again and who predict that the Party will be wiped out Canada style at the next election are going to go to. Will there be a resurgence in defections back to UKIP, which seems unlikely in its current enfeebled state, or can one of its successor parties capitalise on the disgust in the Tory ranks and begin to build some momentum and attract the substantial donations required to create some kind of central organisation?

Of the 23 by-elections during the rest of July there are only 7 UKIP candidates, and two others with successor party candidates.

The climate of opinion at the moment is such that most of the abovementioned disgruntliat would simply abstain rather than voting for anybody else. I know from my own experience that the people who say that they will "never vote for Party X again" don't mean it, because Party X inevitably will change and adapt to the new circumstances. What they actually mean is that they will never vote for Party X under its current leadership, with its current policies, etc.

They will go nowhere as Conservative Home only represent a tiny fringe of the party, no matter what they pretend.

And thus the Conservatives brief spell as largest party in Edinburgh ends again... until the next Nat gets kicked out anyway. Like I said ...didn't take long for that to come true. At this rate Labour will be the largest party by the next elections.

Edinburgh...the Stoke-on-Trent of Scotland? Objection m’lud; we’ve only had one voluntary defection since the 2015 elections along with Richard Brougham being kicked out of both UKIP and the City Independents Group. Very well behaved we’ve become (although there’s another defection imminent).
