That's eight MEPs gone/lost/defected since 2014 by my calculations. UKIP usually lose about half their MEPs over the course of a Parliament, so they've managed to keep more than they normally do. in the previous parliament it looks like the lost 4 of their original 11 members (ignoring the gain of one who was originally elected as a Conservative) - so a retention rate of 64% in this parliament they have lost 8 of their original 25 members - so a retention rate of 68% ... with six months to go ! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_members_of_the_European_Parliament_for_the_United_Kingdom,_2009%E2%80%9314

She had been independent of the Conservatives in the EU Parliament for long before that, if I remember correctly she and Ashworth lost the whip rather than leaving it, and joining the EPP was a little while afterwards. What's happened now is that she's lost party membership.

He was suspended by the Tories when they launched an investigation into his "sexting" exchanges with two women. Here's the latest local coverage on this:

Doesn't matter what your political view is, but they once included large numbers of people who had something interesting to say, libertarians, the Hard Right, and so forth. Not long ago now. And now. Top billing to a man who trained his dog to raise its paw.

He thought UKIP were the best thing since sliced bread about five minutes ago. And, according to the link, he thought back in 2011 that they (UKIP) were a freedom loving alternative to the British people. Note: not an alternative for the people, an alternative to the people. Where did UKIP dredge up people like this? And while I have absolutely no desire to see the Battenites get hold of another Euroseat, I think Batten may have a point that he should resign.

Yes I see the key word "offering" was in the original letter so "to" then made sense, so I accept that the mangling of the English language was by the BBC and not by Mr Etheridge, and I also accept the point made above by Pete Whitehead that maybe I should have checked the original letter before rushing to post. Indeed I have to say if I have to choose between one bunch of kippers and another I would prefer his bunch to Batten and co, and endorse most of what he says in the full text of the letter. That said, I would never vote for his lot either, and still wonder whether Etheridge and the other kipper MEPs no longer in the party they were elected under should resign their seats.

I read that letter as him suggesting that they offered the British people an alternative. Can't see a lot wrong with how he has phrased that, ambiguities of the English language aside. EDIT: Hadn't seen your response when I posted.

according to John McDonnell via Richard Corbett MEP, these 2 expulsions are because they called for an investigation into Viktor Orban. I hope McDonnell doesn't go after this too much, as his MEPs might well find themselves in the same position within the year.

In my time in UKIP I got to know Bill quite well and while I was always a little suspicious over his ambitions I considered him a fundamentally sound bloke. He never, ever considered UKIP to be "the best thing since sliced bread" and in private was a strong voice against the bigots in the party and fought very strongly on the side of the libertarian wing. In public he was always a dutiful party man but behind the scenes he left people in no doubt that he disagreed with many stances taken by the party and did his utmost to get them changed.

according to John McDonnell via Richard Corbett MEP, these 2 expulsions are because they called for an investigation into Viktor Orban. That idea has been going around since it is a notable vote in which they both voted differently to the Conservatives in the EU Parliament, but in all fairness, it's quite easy to explain why they were booted without suggesting it was because of that. They voted (as I'm sure many already know) against moving forward with Brexit talks (not to halt completely but not to move forward just yet, mightn't I add) a few months ago and lost the Conservative whip. Between then and now they both left ECR and joined the EPP. Although I don't agree that they should have lost the whip in the first place (but then I'm not a Conservative member or supporter!), I don't think it's unreasonable for the Conservatives to revoke party membership over that.
