It's a stinking, stinking system. And in about 2 years' time, it won't be a problem for the UK any longer, as there'll be no UK MEPs whatsoever. God rest all the dead spreadsheets and empty d'Hondt calculators it'll leave in its wake. Raises the issue of what the balance in the Euro parliament will look like without the British MEPs... Of course the next Euro-elections might bring a wave of populists washing in from Italy, France and Germany... more problems for the Brussels elites if they actually paid much attention to the parliament anyway..

One thing is that I suspect it will be less diverse - I believe that currently 8 of the 11 BME MEPs come from the British contingent (out of 751 total).

Who are the others? Rachida Dati is the only one I can think of.

Cecile Kyenge of Italy, plus the three overseas MEPs from France (Manscour, Omarjee and Ponga).

Lord Carlile, the former MP for Montgomeryshire, has left the Lib Dems to sit as a cross bencher, apparantly because of ' civil liberties'

Tim is weak on civil liberties? I'm pretty sure that he would be saying that Farron is too pro-civil liberties? He always seemed an odd fit for the party.

He always seemed an odd fit for the party. Yes, he is a big supporter of the snooper charter, among other things. Got the feeling that he won't be missed

It isn't often that I advocate purging people from a party for ideological dissent but the Lib Dems really should have kicked him out years ago. He didn't just disagree with a core principle of the party but he actively aided another party in working against that principle.

When I lived in Machynlleth from 1993 to 1998, I always went along to his surgeries and helped in any way I could (be it just letting Alex know what was happening in the town or when it snowed heavily in 1995, going along and apologising in person to the people who he was going to meet). I found out that he was standing down from Parliament in 1996 quite by accident as I was at the Royal Show, checking on the stock market and asked if I could have a look at the Welsh news that was carried on a separate Ceefax page and there was the stop story "MP to stand down at election". I got the impression that Alex was always more interested in his constituents (but that could be said of most Welsh MP's)

Ms. Wollaston eventually relented. Her complaint was about Trump.

The Times reports that six Labour peers are “poised to defect”, having struck deals with rival parties. They are expected to become Crossbench peers, rather than formally sign up to another Party, but have “struck deals” with the Liberal Democrats and Tories. According to the paper, a Liberal Democrat source said: “We are expecting four to six peers to leave Labour in the next couple of months. We’ve agreed we’ll be putting our whipping cards in their pigeon holes.”

I wonder how many will be the rather questionable Labour affiliates appointed during the New Labour years?
