Adur, Southlands: Byelection on 11 October following resignation (retirement) of Paul Graysmark, UKIP. This one will be interesting. Result in 2016 - UKIP (Graysmark) - 301 Conservative - 289 Labour - 281 LD - 95
and in 2018
Labour 425 Conservative 414
Being as it is in the East Worthing constituency, Labour will doubtless be working this one hard. It will be interesting to see if the Greens, UKIP or the Lib Dems will put up candidates. UKIP's vote collapsed to last place (5.1%, 52 votes) at the local elections, the Greens might not want to inadvertamtly help the Tories at the by-election.

TBH in a local council by-election that shouldn't be our primary concern and I would be very disappointed if there wasn't a Green candidate for that reason.

The question is whether there is the enthusiasm after coming so far behind, having only managed 57 votes last time.

Resignation of Paul Beck (Lab). He was last year's Mayor and had apparently been deselected. Hart Village is a nice part of the world.

Resignation of Paul Beck (Lab). He was last year's Mayor and had apparently been deselected. Hart Village is a nice part of the world. It's a rural part of what is otherwise a urban/industrialised borough. In fact Hart village predates Hartlepool, which is really Hart-le-pool, or Hart by the sea. This is before any hanging of monkeys, naturally. Old Hartlepool is the headland, north of the bay. The modern town centre, where the station is, is what was West Hartlepool, and the two were separate boroughs until fairly recently, thus the soccer club was Hartlepools United, note the plural in the name. West Hartlepool and (old) Hartlepool retain distinct rugby clubs, and this is a town with quite a strong rugby heritage compared with surrounding towns. How do I know all this? Well, my dad was SDP/Liberal Alliance candidate there in 1983. He kept his deposit, too, no mean feat in the days of 12.5% to do that.

The City of London Common Council byelection for Castle Baynard (poll 9 October) looks interesting. There are eight candidates (some may yet drop out):
BECKER, Timothy George Christie - came bottom of the poll in the Billingsgate byelection in March, and in Bishopsgate in November last year EMERSON, Merlene Soo Chin - a prominent London Liberal Democrat HUMPHREYS, Richard William - a high-flying QC and barrister specialising in regeneration cases LLOYD- OWEN, Natasha - a younger barrister, lives in Barbican, standing for the Labour Party MALINS, Julian Henry - QC, but also a past Common Councilman and Alderman; lost in Faringdon Without in 2017; Conservative Party activist OLIVER, Deborah Mackintosh - already an external member of the Policing Committee; lives in Barbican RAJA, Alpa - runner-up (ie only unsuccessful candidate) in this ward in 2017 ROUNDING, Virginia - former Common Councilman for Farington Within ward, lost in 2017
