There appears to be a very rare council byelection in Northern Ireland coming up - Carrick Castle ward of Mid and East Antrim, vice James Brown (Independent). A long time ago he was in the UUP. Normally councillors are replaced automatically by co-option, but presumably Brown didn't name anyone so there's got to be a byelection. (See: Electoral Law Act (Northern Ireland) 1962 (Amendment) Order 2010) What system would the by-election be held under? STV, surely, same as the full elections.

What system would the by-election be held under? As it is a single vacancy, it is AV, isn't it? I thought the two were subtly different - AV only allows a first and second preference, with all but the top two being eliminated if nobody reaches 50% while STV allows voters to give every candidate a preference?

The one that allows only a first and second preference is Supplementary Vote (SV).

By-election in Sutton - Tory resignation in Belmont ward. Patrick McManus. Looks a fairly safe Tory ward at the moment. It was close in 2010 but much has changed since then.

This ward is proposed to move into Carshalton & Wallington so I suspect the LDs will have a good go at it but yes the Tories are favourites to hold.

There is a byelection in Warrington UA, Penketh and Cuerdley ward on 11 October (caused by the death of Labour councillor Allin Dirir). Warrington now has all out elections on the 2016/2020/2024 cycle.

Well, a good go by the Lib Dems in that part of London will be an order of magnitude more than happened last May when the Lib Dems had lots more important things to do. I presume that being a Tory ward in London it will be quite Remainy... I suppose it all depends how unpopular Sutton Council is with Tories in Belmont..
