Anyone overlaid the west coast 'no' vote with Ibrox season ticket holders? The most stereotypically Rangers areas seem to often be communities in the West where "No" won by a large majority despite a very working class social composition. Larkhall, Shotts, and Cumnock all stabd out in this regard - and to a lesser extent you can also see this pattern in the Vale of Leven and around Shettleston and Bailieston. And conversely, stereotypically Celtic areas in the West clearly stand out as being better areas for the Yes campaign. For example Castlemilk, Royston, Coatbridge, Port Glasgow, Clydebank and Greenock.

I’m a bit surprised you have Inverness South (and to a lesser extent maybe Culloden & Ardersier too?) as yes voting - I didn’t think it was socially terribly different to the other suburban areas of Inverness like Ness-side and bits of West / Milburn. And aren’t Thurso and Wick both quite council-estatey and hence you'd expect better for yes? ntyuk1707

After Inverness Central, Inverness South and Culloden & Ardersier had the lowest rates of outright home ownership in Highland at the 2011 census. They had the lowest average ages in the Highland Council area, with a mean age of 36 years old in Inverness South and 39 years old in Culloden & Ardersier. The two wards also had the fewest retirees in the Highland Council area at 10.3% in Inverness South and 12% in Culloden and Ardersier. They also have lots of newer built houses and more semi-detached houses than the western suburbs of Inverness where more properties tend to be detached. Similar demographic characteristics can explain why East Garioch and North Kincardine were relatively better for the Yes campaign compared to other parts of southern and central Aberdeenshire, despite being seemingly better-off areas.

The only ward in mainland Scotland to vote Yes falling within the lowest decile of deprivation was Inverness South (53% Yes). No mainland ward in the next lowest decile voted Yes.
Mainland wards on the highest decile of deprivation to vote No included Fortissat (58% No), Shettleston (53% No), Baillieston (51% No) and Lochgelly, Cardenden & Benarty (51% No).

Inverness South is a weird anomaly, if anything I would expect Inverness West to lean more towards Yes. Inverness Central is grim outside of the City Centre so obviously it's heavily Yes.
