2005 of course was a GEneral election turnout, the labour figure shows what happened to us in some parts of the world.

I suspect the fact that there was only one Green candidate and to a lesser extent only one UKIP candidate contributed to the disparity in the LD votes.

And there ,ight also be an incumbency factor? Giving some of that 2000 as a personal vote. But I think the Green 2nd voters are probably a lot of it.

News from Brighton and Hove, where East Brighton is counting tonight:
turnout is 26.21% with 2859 ballot papers verified including 1105 postal votes
Maidstone is also counting tonight, presumably both the district and county byelections. Don't know about Boston.

Expected backlash against the Greens after their disgraceful treatment of Christina Summers I don't agree with what they did, but I doubt that it was a major issue in East Brighton. There are many other things which the council administration is doing which have been unpopular; the CLPs are very well organised and the Labour campaign was well-judged. Note that all other parties as well as the Greens suffered drops in their shares of the vote.

I posted on the defection thread some time ago how many of my friends who live in Brighton and had previously voted Green were disgusted with their action .

Note that all other parties as well as the Greens suffered drops in their shares of the vote. Except UKIP from a standing start. I don't know their expectations but hope trouncing the Lib Dems (in yet another Brighton ward) and being in notional deposit saving territory will be regarded as positives.

This is consistent with a 10% Lab lead in the opinion polls, although high Green vote and low LD vote makes for a somewhat unrepresentative ward.
