As a born and bred Stokie, who's lived here for 51 of my 51 years and 11 months, I'd say that there is a parochialism that holds us back; I'd go as far as saying even someone from Stoke North/South/Newcastle-under-Lyme would be regarded as an outsider. Just a point on the Mark Fisher/Tristram Hunt comparison, I don't think Tristram's background particularly worked against him in the electorate, he worked hard to immerse himself in local issues and probably "talked Stoke up" more than either Fisher or the other outsider, Rob Flello, and attracted less criticism locally than Fisher who was something of an absentee landlord type MP. His problem, as Phil Burton-Cartlege outlines in his blog, was the manner of his "imposition" left a lingering resentment within the CLP that never went away. I Do you get a vote in this by-election? I had ancestors who lived in Burslem in the late 19th century/early 20th century, all of them working in the pottery industry. I don't think it was considered part of Stoke-on-Trent back then (is it now?) as it was placed in the registration district of Wolstanton.

The other 11 months was at Hereward FE College in Coventry for students with a physical disability.
No, I'm in Stoke South, at least unless/until the boundary changes when I'm expelled from the City into Staffordshire West.
You maybe correct about Burslem (or Boslem as it's known in Pottery dialect) as Federation of the Six Towns to become the City of Stoke-on-Trent didn't take place until 1910, so it may have been connected to Wolstanton (now part of Newcastle-under-Lyme) before that, but it's in fact called The Mother Town as it was the first of the six to ratify Federation, and the inspiration for Arnold Bennett's Bursley. It's also the hometown of current favourite son, Robert Williams.

That's way beyond my area of expertise; given that I'm shall we say vertically challenged, the long-running joke was the closest i came to going down the pit was in a cage to test for gas.... :/

What happened to the charges against Mark Meredith?
A genuine question- I wasn't a huge fan of Mike Wolfe but was surprised to hear of the allegations against his successor.

A slightly different graph than the usual. The three main parties with the Labour lead as a trending line, 1979-2015

Well with him running it's make or break for UKIP. He absolutely has to become at least a very close second or it's curtains for him, and the party as party (not necessarily as pressure group). We can then wait and see what Banks is up to.

Is he definitely the UKIP candidate? ITV News claim to have been told he is "definitely running"; I understand there's a formal selection meeting on Friday evening.
