Party | Name of candidate | Number of unsuccessful parliamentary attempts | Years in which attempts were carried out | Conservative | Brian Keefe | 7 | 1964, 1964 (by), 1966, 1970, 1974 (Oct), 1979, 1983 | Labour | Nigel Knowles | 9 | 1979,1983,1987,1992,1997,2001,2005,2010,2015 | Lib Dem | Simon Knott | 9* | 1959,1964,1966,1970,1974(both),1979,1983,1987 | UKIP | Nigel Farage | 7 | 1994(by),1997,2001,2005,2006(by),2010,2015 | Green | Alan Francis | 8 | 1983,1987,1992,1997,2001,2005,2010,2015 | SNP | William Wolfe | 8 | 1962(by),1964,1966,1970,1973(by),1974(both),1979 | Plaid Cymru | Lindsay Whittle | 7** | 1983,1987,1992,1997,2001,2005,2010 |
Some updates from the general election: I see Alan Francis returned to stand in Milton Keynes North again, while Nigel Knowles stood again in Solihull, and Lindsay Whittle had another shot at Caerphilly. 2019 Alan Francis stood again this time in Milton Keynes South = 10 Lindsay Whittle again in Caerphilly = 9

I’ve just noticed that Paul Rowlinson has stood for Plaid eight times in since 2000, five times for Westminster and three times for the Assembly/Senedd:
2001, 2015, 2017 and 2019 (Westminster) and 2003, 2016 and 2021 (Senedd)
As well as Conwy in 2005.

Especially with the recent run of regular elections, I would have thought that in the major minor parties, so to speak, 7 or more is hardly exceptional. I've done 7 - every election since 1997. I would have though that there would be plenty of LDs, nationalists, Greens etc who are similar, given that the odds of getting elected are rather smaller than either Labour of Conservative. I doubt if my 7 unsuccessful elections is that unusual.

It fascinates me how many times someone can get selected by a major UK party and never actually become an MP (and in some cases have no real prospect of becoming one).
Plaid Cymru | Lindsay Whittle | 9** | 1983,1987,1992,1997,2001,2005,2010, 2017, 2019 |
**All in the same constituency-Caerphilly.
I already posted this on the Caerphilly page, but Whittle is standing again for Plaid in Caerphilly. His 10th go in the constituency. He has also stood three times for the Caerphilly Assembly seat and four times on the regional SE Wales list. Though with Alan Francis standing again, he's still not top of the list.
He's been a bit more successful in local elections having topped the poll in his four member ward in every election since Caerphilly CBC's first election in 1995. He was also leader of Caerphilly CBC 1999-2004 and 2008-2011. And a member of the 2011-2016 Assembly having been elected on the SE Wales list.

Alan Francis is standing for the Greens in Milton Keynes North for his 11th candidacy. Do we think Alan has the record then, of most candidacies without a success? I'll mention it to him when (if) I next see him again as I'm sure he'd appreciate that. But want to be 100% sure it's right first. Worth saying that I don't think he's especially old and he seems to be in good health so I could see him stretching his lead for some time to come.

In terms of candidacies in a General Election, it looks like he probably is. Wikipedia only lists Screaming Lord Sutch - who isn't eligible for the lists in this thread - as a candidate in 5 General Elections (contesting 7 different seats), with his record of candidacies coming almost entirely from By-Elections.

What was Lindsay Whittle doing in 2015? Sitting as an Assembly member between 2011 and 2016.

What was Lindsay Whittle doing in 2015? Sitting as an Assembly member between 2011 and 2016. He was a list member - so that's no excuse!
