Minnesota is full of people of Scandinavian ancestry which probably explains why it was the only state to vote Democrat in 1984. A lot more liberal than average, at that time.
Also, it tends to usually have the highest turnout of any state, which again reflects the historical situation in Norway, Sweden, etc.

No other explanation needed.

Reagan wins 24 votes to 20.
So, in the right circumstances, the GOP candidate could turn out to be most popular here after all.

Well Jesse Ventura bested Reagan in one respect at least. He carried Minnesota

My objection to this thread is that it implicitly compares Reagan with Trump. Trump is not fit stand in his shadow. The relevant comparator for Trump is Minnesota Governor Jess Ventura, who was of course, not that bad a governor. If Trump lives up to him, and he may well, he will have done OK. No, I wanted to see if there were any circumstances under which this Forum could back a GOP candidate over a Democratic one. I recall us four years ago backing Obama over Romney by three to one.

The thing is that despite his crushing defeat Mondale was clearly a credible candidate for President. There is no real reason why the average centre left member of this forum should have felt unable to vote for him. You would probably have to go back to 1924 to find an election where a majority of this site's centre left wouldn't have voted Democrat but then they wouldn't have voted GOP that year either.
