And the Conservatives let him do it and stand as an independent thus cutting off the support of the full machine. What a Fred Karnos! They should have expelled him from the party and put up a bright young candidate to fight a strong Brexit and pro-Heathrow and right wing campaign with a view to him taking it back at the next GE. That would have destroyed the very pro-Zac local association and probably ensured that they lost the seat at the next general election as well.

Yes, that makes perfect sense doesn't it Shirley you stupid cow. The results of a nationwide referendum should clearly be overridden on the basis of a by election in a single constituency. You can bet more Lib Dems, including Farron, will be saying the same thing. It'll probably start with Olney's acceptance speech. Of course it will. It'll be the standard 'the people have spoken and they think the government is crap' stuff we hear at every by election.

That's a very poor description of Richmond Park denisons. Hoxton or Deptford perhaps... Most people in those places live in council estates tho. Ah London. It's not what people think! But Richmond is where The Man (softer more liberal version) lives, yes. Oh I know, but plenty who fit Carlton's description live in those two places or flock there on a regular basis.

Well OK, it isn't really one of the safest Conservative seats at all as the table above proves. It had a very large short-term once only majority, but is in essence a Conservative-LD marginal. He has brought it back into play and brought the LD campaign back into play by his childish actions, and in doing so he has singularly damaged his party and the Brexit cause, so he deserves a thorough going kicking. At least we are shot of him and his green nonsense.

I always thought Zac Goldsmith was a bit semi-detached as a politician. He often looked like he didn't particularly mind one way or the other if he was elected in previous elections.

Biggest own goal in the history of British politics. There have been some dubious decisions on calling general elections that rank well ahead of this.

Quite a surprise to see Howling Laud Hope come 4th as well-Fiona Syms' own 'Independent Conservative' campaign completely flopped.
