Welcome. I had aspirations to be the Parliamentary candidate for Macclesfield in 1979. I thought I had the nomination in the bag when I turned up fit the selection netting and found that members from Poynton, who nominated me, were there in force. Unfortunately the members from Macclesfield were not and the meeting was declared inquorate. The reconvened meeting coincided with the local holiday in Poynton and I lost out in the selection. I stood for Hazel Grove in 1979 but would have relished a fight against Nick Winterton. Who was R A Foster? It was indeed Ron Foster from Tameside, if I recall correctly. He was a member of the Boy Scouts, or rather a Scouter. I do remember him seeking selection, a month or two, earlier in Cheadle earlier (as did I) and getting bombed out. Our CLP chair wrote a letter trying to console him over his rejection explaining that they were probably looking for a younger candidate. He complained to the North West Regional Office to moan about the letter.

I had a quick look to see if I could find anything interesting about him, but the only reference i could track down was him speaking at an election meeting in 1978 in support of the Labour candidate for Chester, Mr R D 'Sandy' Blair, where the other speakers included David Owen and Gwyneth Dunwoody.

If you go into your profile settings, you should now be able to change your display group to "independent".

Good to see you back. Presumably it's no coincidence that you've returned just as the electorate figures for the boundary review have been released. I look forward to seeing your proposals for new constituency names.
