Hi everyone. I'm Charlie. I live in Stockport although originally I hail from Sheffield. Been lurking for a few weeks: I'm a Labour (and Coop Party) member but don't campaign much at the moment as I'm working full time and studying. That's about it!

I don't feel as Alien8Ted as I did from politics so I have changed my name to something more appropriate. Well at least something my dad used to call me when I was young.

Isn’t it ‘apoth ( halfpennyworth)? Spelt Apeth Up North. Apeth is a silly or foolish person. It probably related to having a halfpennyworth of sense.

In October 1886 The Chelsea News and Advertiser recorded the case of Margaret Watts who was found guilty of striking Sophia Thorp, an assistant at a fried fish shop.
Watts had sent her daughter for a "h'a'porth" of fried fish. Daughter came back saying the piece of fish wasn't big enough and wanted another bit. Ran away. Came back again with another halfpenny to add to the first asking for a pennyworth of fish. There was no fish. Watts then turned up and slapped Thorp in the face three times. PC Nash 219 B saw the assault. Defendent was fined five shillings plus three shillings and tuppence for the doctor who testified she'd had a fit brought on by drink.

Yes that’s a better representation , though the h is silent when preceded by ‘ daft’.

Yes that’s a better representation , though the h is silent when preceded by ‘ daft’. It's the one used in nineteenth century newspapers , with other variants appearing later on.
The Co op Stores, or at least one branch, had a character called Harry H'a'Porth who got on by shopping at the Co Op Stores and saving money for life's emergencies and happy events.

I think I'll compromise and go with A'Porth.
Edit: Never pronounced the H in my life so as a Daft A'Porth I'll spell it that way rather than H'a'porth.
