Which is why the main parties not contesting the seat is a bad thing, as we're now gifting airtime to groups that really don't deserve any of it. There isn't any air time at by-elections these days. All the local voter will know is what is said on any leaflets put through their door, and of course most voters put those straight in the bin. I'd expect most anti-Labour voters not to vote, and therefore an even more derisory turnout than usual. Who comes second will likely depend on who is able to conduct a ground campaign. On sheer numerical grounds I'd normally expect 2 to save their deposit, but with so many with similar ideologies competing with each other, it's not likely to be more than 1. The best comparison is with the Howden by-election called by Davis.

There do seem to be some schisms in the broadly fascist camp in the Batley and Spen area...

They have greatest name recognition and should beat their fellow travellers, but the name recognition builds in a ceiling. I suppose if turnout is low enough then 500 votes becomes deposit saving, but if voters are looking for a non Labour but non racist vote, then I suppose one of the Indies might with a good campaign garner 1000 votes. Local knowledge on which Indie passes for serious would be of interest. Kitchin is local, and a member of the Green Party. Khan is former UKIP, but not local.

Just seen photos of a leaflet being delivered in Batley & Spen purporting to come from Britain Stronger In Europe (& with a Will Straw imprint), supposedly endorsing Tracy Brabin. It is actually very clearly an attempt to smear her and ramps up the English Democrats.
Front cover reads: 'Vote Remain Vote Labour in the Batley and Spen By-Election: Tracy will fight for the EU and multiculturalism'
Sample paragraph: 'Please make a special effort in this election to turn out and vote for our Labour Remain candidate and to ensure the worst possible result for the only credible Leave candidate, Therese Hirst, who is standing for those appalling English nationalists, the English Democrats, with their Racist "English jobs for English workers" and an end to "foreigners" getting "our" welfare benefits and social housing.'
The other side is Islamophobic (although still written as if from BSiE), and features a photo of Jo Cox with some women in headscarves.
Ugh.

Presumably the Eng Dems themselves have plausible deniability so no-one can go after them. Clearly Will Straw can complain that it's not genuine - but if there isn't anybody who it is obviously from is there anything that can be done?

If the police wanted to, they could probably find out where it was printed. It depends on their attitude to election law. Some forces will file all complaints in the round file on the floor.

I quite like the idea of voting for Independent Kitchens. Im all for labour saving devices and I think I may have even seen their banner adverts on this site

OK then, who predicted that Labour wouldn't win here? 5.88% I think he was trying to get that 5.88% (4 voters) to own up.

It's possible some mobile users might not be able to see the poll, however. You're doing much better here than you were a few weeks ago, btw. Keep it up.
