This is a late night thread starter, so this could be ill-advised but I have been thinking of this for a while.
This brave new world we find ourselves in of constituencies changing every 5 years can and will lead to situations where there is a lack of continuity between the name of a constituency the area it serves and the MP who represents it.
To avoid this, why not adopt the Australian method for naming Federal Divisions and name constituencies after high profile figures and landmarks? I would miss 'Anywhere South', but an MP representing a new constituency every 5 years does not seem tenable to me.

Well it has been going for a very long time with no problem whatsoever and it tends to be longer gaps than 5-years, as indeed it is now. Most people have very little concern over any of these matters at all. They just want a valid and fair vote. They expect it to have about the same weight as someone in town or country, north or south. They expect to be voting in a group of locals for some sort of patch that they all identify with to some extent even if slight. I don't think most give a twopenny damn whether it is called Brighton & Hove or Brighton West or Brighton Pavilion or even Sussex South No.6. They might accept it being titled Regent but think it odd or silly to begin with? We would have to explain why it is called Regent whereas Brighton Pavilion is a bit more obvious to a local. Calling it Amory would be plain daft and there would need to be a lot of explanation to a public sniggering over what 'The silly buggers are doing now'.
In short it is fine as it is and most of us have an historic or geographic name that fits and works and it acceptable to all and easy to remember up to the point of needing to remember it at all. It is the vote and weight of vote and fairness of vote that matter, not the name, the structure, the contiguity, the sightlines, the travel ease, the shape on the map, or any other of these entirely trivial matter than we all get excited about.
IMO the Australian system is completely barmy and an utterly stupid idea that it would be difficult improve upon for rank awfulness.....like so much that is Australian!

I mostly find the Australian seat names a fucking pain when referring to lists and trying to work out where they are located geographically.

That's all very well and good but what about Mid Wales I say? Do we call the replacement for Ceredigion Geraint (after Sir Geraint Evans from Aberaeron), if so it doesn't sound right.

Today is Mad Monday, when AFL and NRL players traditionally all go on the lash. The Aussies are doubtless waiting to see who does something unspeakable first!

Thanks for that. I was looking under ProBoards forums in particular; I suppose I'm too used to its format.

I wonder if "global sister forums" would be a good off-topic thread. Edit: I see the administrator has beaten me to it!

We should refer to them like the American system, entirely by state and number. (i. e. UK-345, SC-18, NI-4)

Yeah, I don't think he'll find much support for that system on here, but even if we were to use it, I doubt that House of Commons seats would begin with 'UK-'. At the very least there'd be a reference to the constituent countries, and possibly even counties or regions within that.

The whole idea sounds ghastly to me.
Incidentally, if we were thinking of using personal names for constituencies, it might be interesting to look at some of the names that were used for telephone exchanges back in the days of 3-letter/digit codes
