Richard Webber's clusters of parliamentary constituencies (using census data), 1978:- These are the six upper tiers and there are 30 lower tiers.

I suspect very few people would put South Cambridgeshire, Ellesmere Port, and Bromsgrove in the same category today. Or Bath and Lewisham for that matter.

Yes that's what I'm saying - it's fascinating to see how some of these areas have had very diverging social, economic, and political trajectories since then.
I suspect it's a typo that led to Cardiff North West being classified as 'Outer London Suburbs'. Either that or the GWR service was an awful lot better back then.

If the majority of seats within a cluster were geographically concentrated that name, in this case Outer London Suburbs, would be assigned. You'll see other examples - Bebington in the West Midlands, Glasgow Kelvingrove in Inner London etc.

I know any clustering algorithm will produce outliers and the names of clusters can never perfectly reflect all of their members. But I must admit, the description of the Western Isles as part of the South Wales Valleys made me chuckle.

The Parnell split, December 1890. Blue: MP stayed in the Irish National League. Green: MP defected to the Irish National Federation.

Vote loss in 2001 - Tory or Labour greatest loss within a constituency:- There were some seats where the LDs (and Nats) suffered a greater loss compared to their 1997 votes.

On the Glasgow map, what's with that tiny detached part of Elderslie ED/East Renfrewshire County Constituency consisting of railway marshalling yards on the north side of Johnstone?
There's also a really tiny detached part of West Dunbartonshire between Faifley Road and Glasgow Road in Faifley which must have had a pretty minimal (but not zero) population.

There's also a really tiny detached part of West Dunbartonshire between Faifley Road and Glasgow Road in Faifley which must have had a pretty minimal (but not zero) population. The tiny northern area is smaller than it looks on that map. Originally it wasn't really detached, the crescent shaped railway line was used as the border, but later some of the land to the north-east was bought for the site of the water works. The rest was annexed later, but that tiny piece was never added.

MĆ©lenchon's best polling station was in the south of the 18th arrondissement just above the Gare du Nord, with 49% ah yes, that row of blocks along the railway line is visible from miles away. But what's with the Fillon win in La Villette!?
