Rhyming it with "cone" seems to be prevalent in (a) Essex and (b) so-called ex-Red Wall areas from Stoke to the Humber. Is there a link with working class Torysim? A thesis awaits, maybe @boogieeck should spring this on his tutor group.

It’s always been s”cone” in Stoke, but my paternal grandmother, who was from a North Yorkshire farming family, and may have been Tory but was anything but working class, also had the same pronounciation.

Of course, the real battle isn't how you call it; it's how you serve it.

Clearly I can't count. Fixed maps will go up shortly.

The bakery product the scone rhymes with on.
I use both (or rather two of the three) pronunciations, depending on if it's the end of the sentence/phrase or not.
Let's say I eat a cheese scone. In that instance it rhymes with moan, clone and misthrown.
But if I have a scone and jam, it rhymes with on and gone and situpon.
I'm not sure I've ever found a use for rhyming it with soon, moon and waterballoon.

And I can't physically say that without rhyming Scone with Stone. Just cannot do it. There's something deep inside that stops me saying it any other way.

Hereford & Worcester County Council, 1993 election. I was absolutely gobsmacked when my mum (who delivered Focus in a couple of villages) phoned me to say we had won Bredon division. My aunt worked for Hereford and Worcester county council at that time and tells a story that the count was going on in different places and the results being fed through to county hall. She volunteered to work on election night, and was one of a group of people tasked with just answering the phone and recording the results for individual divisions. She duly noted one result which was of a long serving Conservative being defeated. A senior officer read the numbers and decided that they’d better ring the count back to double check them!

Hereford & Worcester County Council, 1993 election. The two counties look like non-identical conjoined twins there. It is a matter of personal taste as to whether one thinks such an image belongs in a thread for pretty maps, I suppose...

Found this - Brexit result on historic counties:- Not certain if it's 100% accurate. I'm pretty sure Bristol counts as an historic county (it gained county status in 1373). and it is clearly missing from that map. So yes, I'd say that the map is not 100% accurate.
