Theresa May and Jeremy Hunt are two who could have lost their seats.

Or in one night, if you're Mark Oaten. Those particular seats were trending away from the Lib Dems by 2010. There was the failed 'decapitation' strategy in the former in 2005, and a near miss in the latter in 2001 against Virginia Bottomley. If anything the LDs would've won more seats in 2010 at the expense of Labour (holding Rochdale and Chesterfield, gaining the likes of Ashfield and Edinburgh South). So no Danczuk, De Piero or Ian Murray, but on the other hand... Zadrozny makes it in.

Bear in mind that a lot of Lib Dems and electoral changers had spent the last decade or so attacking Labour for not holding a referendum on the voting system so it would have been a little difficult for them to turn round and declare the system should be left solely to the politicians of the day. The 2010 Liberal Democrat manifesto doesn't mention a referendum here, though the wording of the clause suggests some negotiating wriggle room: Exactly why they can't cut the number of MPs under the old system is left unexplained. I'd assume it would be because reducing the number of MPs under FPTP makes the system even less proportional. Anyway, our very own iainbhx did a timeline on a very similar- scenario over at alternatehistory.com a couple of years back. It's definitely worth a read.

That timeline was awful, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, I learnt a lot from writing it but that's all you can say.

It really brought home to us Lib Dems how the other parties feel when some rather questionable characters get elected essentially by default election after election. Compared to the dross who were elected to Parliament across the board in 2015, your 2010 was a veritable virtue!
