I suppose you can argue that "None Of The Above" implies an active rejection of the current parties, while "Non-Aligned" can mean either you are a swing voter, or that you have a party alignment but are choosing not to make it public.

At least one poster here has indicated they would be happy to be described as "British Nationalist" - maybe time to revive that category?

A bit of information to impart regarding the forum party groups, if anyone is interested: By coincidence, the sole respective members of both the Lib Dem leaning and Green leaning groups asked me to reassign them elsewhere this evening. Both said groups have been deleted. I have decided I would like to phase out all the "leaning" groups on the basis that you either support a party or you don't - and more to the point, I want to create some space as ProBoards allow only a limited number of groups to exist. I have created a National Health Action group and an Ulster Unionist group since I took on my role a few weeks ago. Only the UKIP leaning group remains. It only has two members, one of whom hasn't posted since before the last general election. I do not intend to create any more such groups for the reasons stated. I was also on the brink of getting rid of the None of the Above group - as I have no sympathy with the entire premise of its existence - but someone asked me if they could re-join it today. As I'm a nice, accommodating sort of bloke, I reluctantly obliged. There's a none of the above group?! Yes, it has two members, one of whom hardly posts. The other is justlooking

I want to make all the forum groups party specific going forward and phase out the rest, for reasons stated upthread.

I was also on the brink of getting rid of the None of the Above group - as I have no sympathy with the entire premise of its existence - but someone asked me if they could re-join it today. I'd have thought "non-aligned" logically covers that. Non aligned I presume is a bit like not voting in an election, as all other parties take your non participation as you would have voted for them just that you didn't get chance etc etc. So by stating none of the above you are making your views abundantly clear, NONE of the current political parties feel worthy of my vote. Though I would like to vote NONE have done enough to gain my voting support. Non Aligned is useful for those who are floating voters who feel free to vote for whom ever they decide at an upcoming election, it is a shame their is a limitation to the number of groups becase a section of being a person leaning towards a particular party, as I would have voted green at one point but had not joined or helped the party which I feel being full member of should suggest.

It is worth noting that you can edit your profile to show whatever status you want if you feel the party groups available do not sufficiently express your views.

There are an almost infinite number of gradations of opinion, but I think AdminSTB is taking the pragmatic view that the basic cleavage is between those who are party members and those who are not. Based on the limited number of potential groups, and the fact that some of the existing ones are teetering on the verge of extinction, I can see the point of this.

Nothing against Swan, just said it is a shame there is a limitation to the grouping which is out of his hands.

Unless you told any or all of them that you would vote for them you are a non voter pure and simple. And even if you did say you would vote for X party , if you didn't then do so it is meaningless in terms of "support". Non aligned means you aren't aligned to a party. You might change your mind, but then again you might not and you may be non aligned for ever (and ever).

Yes, I think very few people involved in politics think of non-voters as their natural supporters, and those who do tend to be involved in campaigns which lose very heavily. The much more common response is not to care what non-voters think, because they don't vote.

Despite my attitude, I am okay for Just Looking to retain his None of the Above label as long as I don't run out of party groups.
But I do want to phase it out eventually, perhaps unless the NOTA option ends up being mandatorily included on ballot papers by default (which I imagine is unlikely to happen). I don't intend to add anyone else to the NOTA group and will probably delete it if Just Looking ever decides to ally himself to any political party in the future, or go non-aligned.
Without wanting to put him on the spot, but to be frank, I am curious to know what exactly Just Looking expects from a political party, and hope he's not just waiting for something to turn up that just isn't going to turn up.

How many groups are you allowed? I'm not actually sure; I just remember Kris saying there was a limit. I have asked ProBoards Support and will get back to you when they reply - I have a feeling there are more available than I'd thought. I still want to keep the member groups party specific.

This is rather embarrassing, but I am now informed by ProBoards Support that there is no limit at all to the number of forum groups I can create! This was not the impression I had previously been given. Perhaps there had been restrictions that have now been lifted, or Kris wanted to avoid being bombarded with daft requests. I want to remain selective about what sort of groups I create, to prevent the whole thing becoming a mess. I'd like to restrict it to non-aligned and political party support for now, but I can see the merit in carrying on with labels such as "Socialist", "British Nationalist" or introducing "Scottish unionist" (which ntyuk1707 once requested) and that sort of thing. You can send me a message if you want me to consider creating a new group on your behalf.

I think you need to ask yourself (or more importantly members need to ask themselves) what is the point of being in a group? If it is just to label yourself then we are all able to put that in our avatar panel if we wish. Being formally in a group only matters if it gives you access to a specific group sub forum. I would respectfully submit to justlooking that being the single member of the NOTA group gives him no additional benefits over writing "None of the Above" if he feels strongly enough to care. I would suggest that groups be restricted to parties who have enough members to make a sub forum viable
