carlton43 as noted elsewhere is no longer shown as a Reclaim supporter. Wasn't he Reform previously rather than Reclaim? Whichever it was, or is, or may be ... He's back.

he's in the North Somerset area not far from Bristol I wasn't sure where he was in the South West, I was just using a random South West location. To be honest, I would expect it to be worse around Bristol. Weston super mare i believe

He said locally though. I can well imagine, down in the South West around middle class Exeter dinner tables etc., that it's still an issue. In terms of the SDP, they are pretty leftist in some of their economic views. They're basically quasi-nationalist soccon socdems, and that's a fairly common view to be fair to them. I'm not sure it can be described as "hard-right". The SDP seem to be what the Conservative Party are cosplaying while at the same time attempting to assert that they aren't.

Fiscal drag, in every sense.

Their most high profile supporter seems to be Rod Liddle, enough said.

In fact he is not a member of either and he still 'does not take sugar'. I thought you'd declared renewed support? In a brief spurt of enthusiasm I indicated 'renewed support' but that waned. I did nothing about it and had not intended to become an actual member, so my statement above was accurate and not in conflict with my earlier post. Surely much of the electorate is in my position in warming to, then waning from, then having hostility to, all in the space of as little as a week? We live in febrile times. It is not we in the churn that are worrying, but those still supporting parties loyally despite their manifest errors, defaults and detriments. What is there to be loyal to?

Polite society antisemitism. Hints of it are not uncommon at Edinburgh University. Not entirely sure it's that prevalent on much of the South West to be honest, and that was certainly a slightly strange description of Exeter "polite society anti-semitism" is both a bizarre concept and an oxymoron!

It is very real. Richard Griffiths's 'Fellow Travellers of the Right' has a good description on pages 64-65. The basics of it was that it superficially rejected open racial abuse and conspiracy theory, but still regarded Jews as others, not quite of the same class, and distasteful to 'patriotic Britains' - coupled with explicit acceptance of Jewish stereotypes.

Sounds pretty similar to "golf club" racism, where Jews somehow never get elected to membership.

Reminds me of a friend of mine who's dad was a proper bona fide hippy and remained so until the day he died, but was also one of the most vehement racists you could ever meet...

Weren't there suggestions of this being a factor in the 1962 Orpington by-election?

Weren't there suggestions of this being a factor in the 1962 Orpington by-election? Never heard that. However it had all the classic by-election themes we now associate with massive swings... The by-election was considered unnecessary and designed to parachute in the Conservative candidate. Also (according to Wikipedia): During the campaign, Goldman attracted criticism for living outside the constituency and admitting that he had no plans to move into it. His close association with the Exchequer also meant his standing was damaged when the Conservative government was forced to announce a pay freeze (Selwyn Lloyd's "Pay Pause") for public sector workers that was seen, in particular, to penalise nurses.

Chris Cook's book on by elections mentions it in passing.
